Tiger: I'll do Buddha

CHEATING Tiger Woods promised to mend his ways yesterday - with the help of Buddhism.

The golf superstar had tears in his eyes as he apologised for betraying wife Elin during flings with a string of women.

In a 13½-minute speech, Tiger, 34, said fame and fortune had led him to act as though he lived by different rules from his millions of fans.

He confessed: "I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated."

Tiger will return to rehab today to continue the fight to rehabilitate himself and save his marriage. And he also revealed he is turning for support to the Buddhist faith.

The winner of 14 golf majors said: "I was raised a Buddhist and I actively practised my faith from childhood until I drifted away from it in recent years.

"Buddhism teaches to stop following every impulse and learn restraint. Obviously, I lost track of what I was taught."

I hope he finds comfort in his Buddhist faith.

I enjoy reading The Teaching of Buddha and The Way to Freedom.

I’m Christian but I enjoy the Buddhist teachings— there are some good lessons to be found.

I think that this headline badly needs to rephrased.

I don’t have a problem with Buddhists; I have a problem with Communists.

“I hope Woods grows up and finds Jesus.”

As a former Buddhist and now born again Christian I agree with you.

If Tiger ever visits the White House again he just ensured that he’ll be using the garbage door.

IF the guy really cared about his wife and kids he’d take his billion bucks and go quietly into the sunset and start a golf school or something. I’m afraid he wants his old life back with all the trimmings but this time he’ll be more careful. Elin is too young and beautiful to waste her good years on this cad. Get out while you can. Even his mom doesn’t believe him.

Enough of Tiger Woods. The world should be concentrating on our “RULES OF ENGAGEMENT” in Afganistan...

I respect parts of Buddhism, too; and I do not doubt that it is possible for Tiger to “feel” redeemed by his Buddhism. But the real question in pursuing a philosophy of redemption is not whether it makes you feel the way you want to feel, but whether it is based on TRUE TRUTH, and not just a warm fuzzy assurance that “I feel better now,” or, “I am once again at one with the universe,” or some such subjective assurance. No matter how much Buddha and his mother admire Buddhist teachings (many of which may be simliar to Christianity, or even pre-date it), Buddha is still in his grave, while Christ rose from the dead in real time-space history, vindicating his claims to be the exclusive Way, the exclusive Truth, and the exclusive Life—competitors excluded. Buddha himself humbly told those who would follow him to forget him and focus merely on his teachings. That is, remove Buddha himself from his teachings, and you still have a nice, quietistic method for coping with our own anxiety; but you do not have true truth, as in a history book. But in this regard there was nothing “humble” about Jesus. He not only forgave sins against Him, but claimed to forgive the sins of one person against another! And he backed it up by the great Miracle on which all of history pivots, second only to the Creation itself.
Remove Christ from Christianity, and you have nothing, because Christ placed himself at the middle of his teaching in such a way that he had to be a madman if He really is not the God Incarnate He claims to be. It’s too bad that Brit Hume did not put it to his viewers this way on TV when he said what he did. The real question for all of Brit’s viewers is: The question is not which philosopy, religion, or “approach to self-fulfillment” is BEST. The questions is: “Which one is TRUE?”

I gave up my former agnosticism when I found that I prefer True Truth—notwithstanding all its sharp edges and unanswered questions—over merely religious truth. To those whose names are not written in our sovereign God’s Book of Life, such talk as this will always sound like arrogant folly. To the rest, it is the Water of Life.

Where he to truly step away from "attachment" it would be a good start

The Noble Eightfold Path
the fourth of the Buddha's Noble Truths—is the way to the cessation of suffering (dukkha). It has eight sections, each starting with the word "samyak" (Sanskrit, meaning "correctly", "properly", or "well", frequently translated into English as "right"), and presented in three groups known as the three higher trainings. (NB: Pāli transliterations appear in brackets after Sanskrit ones):

Prajñā is the wisdom that purifies the mind, allowing it to attain spiritual insight into the true nature of all things. It includes:
-- dṛṣṭi (ditthi): viewing reality as it is, not just as it appears to be.
-- saṃkalpa (sankappa): intention of renunciation, freedom and harmlessness.

Śīla is the ethics or morality, or abstention from unwholesome deeds. It includes:
-- vāc (vāca): speaking in a truthful and non-hurtful way
-- karman (kammanta): acting in a non-harmful way
-- ājīvana (ājīva): a non-harmful livelihood

Samādhi is the mental discipline required to develop mastery over one’s own mind. This is done through the practice of various contemplative and meditative practices, and includes:
-- vyāyāma (vāyāma): making an effort to improve
-- smṛti (sati): awareness to see things for what they are with clear consciousness, being aware of the present reality within oneself, without any craving or aversion
-- samādhi (samādhi): correct meditation or concentration, explained as the first four jhānas

[...] while Christ rose from the dead in real time-space history [...]

As Carl Sagan famously said: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof."

Would you mind submitting the photographic evidence, satellite imagery, taperecordings, DNA tests, fingerprints, or at least sworn depositions of reliable, unbiased eye-witnesses to support your claim? You know - the same standard of evidence which you would demand to see before buying swampland in Florida, acknowledging an illegitimate child, or electing an allegedly Hawaii-born President?

Regards,
