Sports Viewers Largely Republican

If you're a GOP strategist looking for key primary votes, spend your valuable advertising money on PGA Tour events. If you're a Dem trying to win over your base, focus on advertising during NBA games.

So says a new study among hundreds of thousands of Americans examining the correlation between viewers' favorite sports and their voting habits. And, the survey shows, most dedicated sports watchers are much more likely to vote with the GOP than they are to vote with Dems.

Researchers at National Media Inc., a GOP firm, analyzed survey results from a total of 218K interviews between Aug. '08 and Sept. '09. The polling was conducted by Scarborough USA, a joint project of Nielsen and Arbitron, the 2 top ratings agencies in the country. The data helps TV and radio stations and the country's newspapers set ad rates by evaluating viewership habits.

I wonder where the UFC is at on this scale?

I don’t watch tennis at all.

Although I don’t question your statement about big name tennis players being lefties, that makes no sense. Aren’t they like golfers - solo practioners, one man/woman corporations who don’t eat if they don’t win?

Or are tennis players coddled through life by some kind of tennis syndicate?

I'm not really sure; not the biggest tennis fan. I can't explain why the dynamic exists, but I know that it does. It could have something to do with the volume of non-American players that participate in the sport professionally. If you think about it, there are only a handful of American pros, relative to the field, unlike professional American golf that is dominated by mostly American players.

Men are the majority of sports fans, and the majority of white men are Republican. The NBA has a large “urban” audience so it polls differently.

"The WWE being so far over to the left is kind of shocking to me."

Most of the wrestlers on their roster tend to be Republicans, not to mention the owner and his wife.

MLS surpising to me

Not really. Why? Because in countries where aspects of socialist policy are ingrained into the culture, soccer is by far the #1 spectator sport--no contest!

(Sigh) If only more on the right would discover that F-1 is far superior to, and more exciting than NASCAR...

MLS doesn't surprise me. Lots of WWE fans are children, but they can't vote.

I'm a big F-1 fan myself - been to the Monaco Grand Prix twice (with one year being won by Juan Pablo Montoya, coincidentally). I'm also a fan of American LeMans, and try to make it to that series when it comes to Mid-Ohio.

Although I normally loathe Soccer (a leftist sport, as you point out), I probably won't turn off the World Cup when it's on, very exciting.

I have no choice but to watch the World Cup, as I live with a Brazilian and she controls the TV (I control other things, as I don’t watch the tube that much anyway).

...the WNBA is as far blue as it gets.

In case you haven't been following it nor reading Debbie Schlussel's web site, the WNBA has a strong lesbian stench to it. So the finding that its followers are strongly 'Rat is hardly surprising.

I personally wouldn’t speak—or I think think—so derogatorily of such a subset of Americans. (And no, I’m not a lesbian!)

But they I think lesbians are as strongly represented on the LPGA Tour, which is why I find the divergence of political leanings so interesting. As someone else above mentioned, the LPGA is probably stronger in more rural and more conservative parts of the country and the WNBA is I expect stronger in more urban and in the more liberal Northeastern parts of the country.

But because the LPGA has such a lesbian component and is so conservative is part of why I wish some Freepers would be more tolerant thereof.

Some of these results are interesting and a few surprising. The fact that the more popular professional team sports (except the NBA) attract more GOP followers is a bit unexpected, considering that the owners of professional sports teams and the media who promote these enterprises are overwhelmingly 'Rat and are not infrequently found among the largest contributors to 'Rat candidates and organizations. Here the reality is at odds with the meme promoted by the 'Rats of wealthy GOP capitalists taking advantage of the poor little (Democrat) "consumer."

Also surprising is that the college football followers skew strongly GOP, when one might expect that decades of leftist brainwashing of college grads would make alumni of the schools - who would be expected to be the biggest fans - predominantly 'Rat. There, as well, the vast majority of those who profit financially are Dems.

Yet the biggest sports network (ESPN) is populated with mostly Obamaphiles, some of them vocally so.

There are some surprises

Like viewers of the Olympics being to the right (albeit only slightly) of NFL viewers, for instance.

I’ve never followed women’s golf at all so I have no comment on lesbianism within the LPGA. It’s one of the least popular of all spectator sports and has been ever since it started. Of course, if you yourself are involved or have close friend or relative who is, I can understand your interest in it.

That’s because male liberals tend to wear skirts and shun sports.

The MSM sports media is just a subsidiary of the MSM news media, so that's hardly surprising. ESPN is merely an arm of ABC, for example.

The sports MSM is equally adept at leftist social engineering projects, like sticking female "journalists" into men's events and locker rooms. I'm sure I'm not the only male sports viewer who is antagonized by this practice.
