INGAPORE (Reuters) Scientists in China have demonstrated how arsenic -- a favorite murder weapon in the Middle Ages -- destroys deadly blood cancer by targeting and killing specific proteins that keep the cancer alive.
"Our study showed how arsenic directly targets these proteins and kills them," lead researcher Zhang Xiaowei at the State Key Laboratory of Medical Genomics in Shanghai, China, told Reuters.
"Unlike chemotherapy, the side effects of arsenic (in treating acute promyelocytic leukemia) are very low. There is no hair loss or suppression of bone marrow (function). We are interested in finding out how arsenic can be used in other cancers," Zhang said by telephone.

"This shows how Western technology can be used to find out about the mysteries of Chinese medicine," Zhang said.

The bad news is the patient is dead.
The good news is his cancer is cured.
Scrutable ping.
And without hair loss.
Arsenic: It’s Not Just For Dinner Anymore.
Not just for Borgias anymore.
“The good news is his cancer is cured.”
I fear what kinds of “cures” will become the standard of care under ObamaCare. I’m not sure the average American is going to trust a government-promulgated “guideline” recommending use of arsenic to cure cancer. But then again, they may not have much choice once rationing is underway in full swing. Once people realize how this plays out in the real world, they will realize that “death panels” was no exaggeration.
I recall several years ago the discoverer of Laetrile claimed the arsnic in apricot pits killed cancer.
Are we now finding out there is something to it? Hmmmm.
Interestingly enough, arsenic has been used to treat syphillis. Re: the film “Dr. Ehrlich’s Magic Bullet” with Edward G. Robinson.
I wonder what the antifreeze, that they put in our toothpaste cures! Or the melamine in baby formula? http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1856168,00.html
If arsenic is the cancer killer then what need is there for laetrile?
Its not really so surprising. Most medicines are poison in larger doses.
This is not unusual as all drugs are potential poisons. Nitrogen mustard (a war gas) is still used to combat lymphomas.
The apricot pits (Laetrile) contain cyanide, not arsenic.
Too much of many things, including water and oxygen, might kill you too.

I wonder if this could work on other leukemias with similar fusion proteins, if there are any?
This is about the how of the thing.
The devil is in the delivery?
Before going on the market, the “how” has been already established...
