Can DUI affect next job application
moleman

Posted on 06/13/2010 10:59:12 AM PDT by Moleman

Hello all, Friday I was "downsized" from my position in Sales for an automotive supplier. I have a few leads that I feel I am well qualified for. My concern is a ercent drinking and driving conviction. Was a first time offense but still an offense. It was pleaded down to a four point ticket. What is your opinion of having a drinking convicion on your record when applying for medium level Managment positions?

Thanks

Not for the first one. And if every asked if you have been convicted of a crime the answer is no. You are cuffed at the point of the MV stop, once you fail field sobriety.

A habitual offender is treated different, no bail etc.

Sounds like my last fem-nazi boss. She was a control freak and a closet man hater. I was never so glad to hand my notice in when I got another job elsewhere.

The HR type wasn’t much better. She liked to drink and party to the wee hours. Whenever she bothered to come to work in the morning, sometimes in a long coat, her office would be locked until she dressed and cleaned up.

After making further inquiries, I must modify what I said earlier. The question, according to my Dir.HR, SPHR, uses the question "Have you ever been convicted of any crime other than minor traffic offenses?" Some employers may use additionally, within the last seven years, however this can leave a loophole as when someone has just been released from prison after doing ten years.

Good luck on your job search. Stay upbeat and positive, answer the potential employers questions honestly and sell who you really are.

I think the fact that it was recent is more significant than the conviction. Are you only recently aware of the law? That would be my focus and concern.

Just make sure you are honest and forthcoming about it happening. Better not to hide it because it will come up on the most basic background check. Heck...every ticket and vehicle accident you've ever been involved in (at fault or not) will pop up.

Thanks for the clarification 2A. I would need to say “yes” and explain and be upfront should this be the case.
Thank you again for the info and well wishes

It was pleaded down to a four point ticket.

You don't need to answer here, but what exactly is the conviction? Was the actual conviction dui/dwai or something like that or was it pleaded down to another pure traffic citation? Companies are very careful about what they ask, so you be equally careful about how you answer. And I certainly wouldn't volunteer any information!

What company doesn’t require an application? Any company I’ve ever applied at, no matter the position, required an application. I’ve worked as HR in small businesses and would never hire someone based on only their resume’. Never heard of it.

It reeks of elitism and is of little use on FR

Apparently you've never visited the religion forum here.

What’s important for you to understand is it has a lot to do with what you do now and how you deal with it.

I am a supervisor and I oversee decisions on new hires.

Many companies have a background check process, and they will ask you to disclose anything in your background that is important. Some people are so stupid they will not disclose the thing, even though they are told the background check is going to uncover it. If it’s a legal matter and it was expunged, still disclose it. Don’t count on the expungement to cover it up.

Think of the DUI as something in the past that you cannot change, which is what it is. If you are asked about your past, you should disclose it, and then you should explain how you, as a person have benefited from the experience. If you are sincere, and you describe a positive outcome from this event, that is your best bet.

Don’t bother to try to bullsh*t a hiring manager though, because they are very good at detecting it. You don’t stand a chance if you intend to try to bs your way through the process. Be honest, and open, and disclose all. If the company still doesn’t want you after that, then that wasn’t the right company anyway. Good companies understand that people make mistakes, and they understand redemption. If not, you don’t need them.

If the job involves driving in any way, you’re sunk so don’t even apply. And make sure you get help if you need it.

New Mexico has a terrible DUI problem.

It’s a scourge and I have great loathing for drunk drivers.

I have always thought well of you here on FR.

Please don’t do it again. I’d like to keep my regard for you.

Thanks, Slim

It should not matter if you are honest about it and have no other mistakes like that and you don’t have a drinking problem which can be determined by reference interviews and your work history. Keep a positive attitude. One DUI SHOULD not matter in this day and age where anyone could be arrested at any minute - we have so many laws and slap happy cops now. Decent people know that decent people make mistakes. The world is full of decent people and you don’t want to work for a person who is mean spirited anyway.

Big corporations usually have inflexible bureaucratic human resources rules about these issues in hiring. Those rules would probably be available to you upon contacting their human resources machines.

I don’t know if you beleive in God, but if you do, remember that He is your Father and He owns the company and is in charge of all the people you will meet. He loves you and he’ll give you a break!

It was pleaded down to a four point ticket.

But was it still a DUI or did they make it a reckless driving offense?

Actions have consequences. Mitigate them the best you can and as others have suggested, forget drinking if you plan to drive.

...and when people start correcting other peoples [sic: should read: people's] use of syntax in snide manner that’s a bit over the top IMHO...

Was I being snide? I merely suggested that Moleman have someone proofread his resumé. And since then, Moleman has sent me two friendly private posts.

And I wasn't correcting his syntax (vulgo: sentence structure), but rather only his spelling and punctuation.
