MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Kevin Stringfellow will never forget the frightening attack by two pit bulls he suffered Tuesday as he walked from a neighborhood store.

"I saw two dogs coming toward me, and started grabbing me and biting me real hard," he said Wednesday.

Two pit bulls latched on to him, leaving 52 holes in his arm. The dogs even left holes on Stringfellow's pants.

"One of them was just tearing my arm up," he said. "The other dog was biting me on my leg. I thought I was already dead cause I never had a pit bull bite me."

Stringfellow had to use an empty beer bottle to fight for his life.

"I'm telling them get away from me. Get away from me. Found a bottle and started hitting them real, real, hard," he said.

Unfortunately, not everyone who was attacked by the dogs was as lucky as Stringfellow. William Parker, 71, had a heart attack and died after the dogs attacked him. Parker, his daughter, and two paramedics were also bitten.

The dogs belong to Bernard Humphrey, a resident of an apartment complex on North Manassas who was arrested Sunday after police discovered he failed to update his address for the sex offender registry. A girlfriend was left to care for the dogs after Humphrey was taken into custody.

"They shouldn't have those dogs in these apartments in the first place with all these children walking around here," Stringfellow said.

Stringfellow considers himself lucky, despite a unfortunate tragedy.

"I thank God," he said.

The dogs remained locked up Wednesday at the Memphis Animal Shelter.

A walking stick made of 3/4 black iron pipe will work. I smacked a doberman, across the head with a shovel once, when he tried to bite me. Last person he ever tried to bite.

I was thinking about getting some bear spary as well.

When I walk the dog on the bike path, it is possible to encounter both stray dogs as well as black bears.

At that point though, I would want to have my .44 mag ready to go. I haven’t been taking the dog on the bike path here lately though, being that I don’t have a pistol permit.

You would be better off with a gun,,,

If you can’t do that a squirt bottle full of ammonia will

keep them off of you,,,

That as well as pepper gas can blow back on you in the
wind,,,

You could try callin’ the cops and your local Animal Control

but they have proven worthless here...

I would carry a walking stick, it will look just like a normal walking stick but is instead a shark powerhead or bang stick.

Pitbulls are like miniature lions. They should be outlawed. I don’t care if the owners are nice or nasty, these animals have aggressive genes and there’s no stopping them.

I’ve been looking at the S&W Thunder Rancher .45 acp revolver here lately, with that round being much slower than the .44 mag round.

You don't have to buy another handgun to get a slower round. Just use .44 Special loads in your .44 Mag.

Heh, I’ve got about two boxes of specials left over that I completely forgot about. I guess after I started firing magnum rounds through the weapon, I just never went back to the special round.

Thanks for the post, I had completely forgotten about that capability.

If he really did beat them away with a beer bottle, they weren’t that determined and not that dangerous.

imo, for defense against a pitbul(or any mean dog), best thing is a long thin knife...like a cane sword or a little smaller. A large switchblade stilletto. Plunge straight down between the shoulderblades while it’s biting your dog. No loud noises. No crowds attracted to you. No need to call the cops. The pit will yelp, let go, run away, and die somewhere else approximately a block away. Finish your walk and go home.

I carry chemical mace + pepper spray, but I’m not sure if that would be enough.

I'm hoping that it is possible to obtain a taser, legally or illegally. Our family pet at 40 pounds and with a "wus" personality would last seconds against a vicious dog, and I have one close by. It's a rottweiler I call Cujo for obvious reasons, and in the past, on several occasions he has actually tried to exit through the wooden fence retaining him.

I want to make sure that any confrontation between us is as unequal as possible -- in our favor.

The dog is an attack dog, but I refuse to be intimidated into abandoning the use of our neighborhood common areas out of fear.

Say what??!!??

54 holes in his arm and "not that dangerous?"

are you dense? He might as well been beating them away with a cellphone. Neither are effective weapons. 54 punctures is only about 6 bites. Notice there’s no mention of tears or rips.

No, the dog was not very determined.

People who generalize are ignorant. I don’t care if they’re expressing their opinions, these people are inherently flawed and there’s no convincing them.

I would consider reporting the owner for harboring a vicious dog, which is a crime in some states.
