Crazy cat ladies: Why always cats? Why always ladies?
MSNBC ^

Posted on 07/28/2010 7:30:12 PM PDT by Chet 99

Diane Mapes writes: We’ve all heard the stories of people keeping outrageous numbers of animals. The Today Show ran a segment on the topic just last week, to coincide with the premiere of Animal Planet’s new show, “Confessions: Animal Hoarders”.

But why is it so many of these tales seem to involve women and cats?

There was the elderly woman in Phoenix with 104 cats, 10 of them dead and tucked into freezers; the woman in Greeley, Colo., whose house was condemned after authorities discovered she was harboring 83 felines. Women cat hoarders have been discovered in Citrus Heights, Calif., where a woman and her mother had 60 cats; Orange City, Fla., where rescue workers discovered an unconscious woman surrounded by 59 cats and Piney Flats, Tenn., where a 64-year-old woman was found living in a trailer with 31 cats.

And that’s just so far this month.

Is there something that makes women more prone to animal hoarding than men?

In all seriousness, there’s a German biofuels researcher who powers his volkswagen diesel with fuel made from the bodies of dead cats. He buys them from a vetinary crematorium a ton at a time and cooks them into diesel.

Then there’s the guy at U of I who came up with diesel made of hog manure...

Did you know pit bulls score better on temperament tests than golden retievers or beagles? In fact, they score about 8% points higher than beagles.

Judging a breed by what some ghetto poser does with it is like seeing all these reports of crazy cat ladies and assuming every cat owner will eventually have to cope with 80 cats in their house.

Pits are inherently dangerous imo. My brother’s Jack Russell was attacked by one last week and was badly injured. It was an unprovoked attack. The pit had already killed the neighbors poodle on her front porch. My brother killed a pit last week thinking it was the one but it was not. The killer is still on the loose. My brother has had pits in the past and fully admits, their temperment can escalate. I don’t know what study you read those stats in but I’ve never seen agressive Beatles, or goldens. I can only speak about what I know and read.

I was joshing with chet but don’t have a complaint about his postings.

Here's one spot (not the only one) where I got my information: Bad Rap. Looking around this site is something everyone who talks about this issue should do. Also, thought there's a link at Bad Rap for it, here's the American Temperament Testing Society (ATTS) statistics on dog temperament. I was wrong, BTW, pits only beat Beagles by 5%. In other words, the media tells us that pit bulls are child killing engines of destruction, while an organization that actually tests breeds using a scientifically structured tests tells us that they have about the same aggression level as a golden retriever.

No offense to your brother (I feel terrible for his loss and glad that he was man enough to take care of business when he saw another pit running loose) but the thing is that any dog improperly handled can get ramped up aggression. If a ghetto poser fights his dog or trains it to be aggressive, it will be. If he gets a dog that needs two hours of exercise a day and frequent human interaction and leaves it alone chained in the yard seven days a week, it will get aggressive. That's what's happening with most, if not all, the Pits we're reading about in the news, and none of it is inherent to the breed.

Solosmoke has posted interesting stuff about how in the early part of the last century the media was campaigning to get rid of German Shepherds for the same reasons Pits are now in the news, So I'm going to ping him in.

Solo, can you provide your pdf link to Outlaw Woman? She has an open mind.

I appreciate you providing further information and I will dig into it and I fully agree that the owners and their method of raising these animals directly affects them. However, my brother’s pits were raised from puppy and although seemingly docile, did exhibit aggression at times; i.e. growling and approaching. My brother is a gentle man when it comes to K9’s but it seems that wasn’t enough to offset whatever instinct they seem to have. There was never an ‘incident’ though. The publicity that these dogs garner is the result of the true damage they can do when they aren’t controlled.

It’s true the media is playing a huge part in shaping public opinion toward these dogs (sort of the way they did with the marxist in the WH) however, the incidents reported did happen and they are devastating because there have been deaths and maimings.

Either way though....I don’t have a dog in this fight (pun intended). I’m a cat person :) (probably will end up like the crazy lady in the story LOL....not) and if I did get a dog it would be a collie or Tervurian (sp) as I have experience there.

Thanks for the additional info Silverback. I’m sure if you have a pit bull it is extremely well behaved and you are most likely very responsible regarding its handling so it isn’t a threat.

This is an old article they are running again. I read this from MSNBC at least about 4-5 months ago. I guess they recycle their old stuff and stick a new date on it when they have a slow news cycle in the feature section. I know this for a fact because I sent the same article to some of my friends when it first came out.

I am a crazy cat lady and proud of it so kiss my a... MSNBC. Not every female with more than two cats is a mental case. I found the article offensive a few months ago and I find it offensive now.
