Kindle Wi-Fi: Has Amazon won the e-reader war?
Christian Science Monitor ^ | July 30, 2010 | Matthew Shaer

If you believe the buzz around the Web today, the Amazon Kindle Wi-Fi – a sleek, graphite-colored e-reader priced at $139 – is the best electronic reading device ever. Over at PC World, for instance, Jared Newman declares that "Amazon's new Kindle spells doom for other e-readers." His logic is simple: The Kindle Wi-Fi undercuts the price on devices such as the Borders Kobo and brings the fully-featured e-reader to a reasonable price-point.

I am almost tempted to get the Wi-Fi Kindle but perhaps I will keep holding out and buy used books. I wonder if Amazon does "win" it will be a pyrrhic victory with what appears to be a wave of Android based tablets hitting the maket soon.

FWIW, I think the folks at CNET went with the Nook.

Were they comparing the Nook to the current Kindle or the new one that comes out on Aug 27? I’ve been sitting on the sidelines, waiting for a clear winner and now have my 3rd generation Kindle Wi-fi on pre-order.

Here's the lastest (I think) on the Nook from CNET...

B&N Nook (Wi-Fi)

In the interest of full disclosure, I don't have a dog in the hunt. I prefer dead tree editions since I keep most of the books I read, and I don't plan on getting an e-reader 'til the price of e-books drops precipitously :)

I own a Kindle, about a year or so now, and love it but just upgraded to the Sprint EVO 4G with a Kindle app. I downloaded the app and have all my Kindle purchased books available on the phone.

I don’t know if I’ll continue to use the Kindle since the EVO has a relatively large screen and the books are very readable on it.

I highly recommend the Kindle or the app on a Droid as the downloads are in seconds, not minutes and the books are cheap, cheap, cheap. Maybe I should have said inexpensive, not cheap. LOL

I was doing some research and for me the main advanyage of the Nook is it takes external memory cards and you can change the battery.

It’s about time that Amamzon caught onto the Videogame strategy - lose money on the console to make it up on game sales.

Lose money on the Kindle hardware, make it up in book sales.

The title of this article should be "Free Market Competition Increases Customer Choice, Drives Down Prices."

The new Kindle makes sense. Amazon was brilliant in including free, limited 3G to the original Kindle, as it truly created a unique experience. Finish a book in you beach chair? Buy another without budging. But that did force the Kindle to be higher priced, and the competition leaped on that.

Another benefit for a lower-priced Kindle is for less voracious readers. While the 3G version is great for the voracious reader who finished a book and wants to download another one before jumping on an airplane, the wi-fi only version makes sense for someone who does not see themselves buying books on the spur of the moment.

Second, the price point for e-readers is now solidly below $200, while the price point for full featured tablet computers like the iPad is solidly above $400. These two markets are dividing rather than converging.

Finally, it is very smart for Amazon to come out with a graphite colored e-reader. Kindle's e-ink screen is best in bright light conditions, but a white frame is too reflective in bright conditions. The dark frame improves readability.

I love my kindle! I love being able to order a book and have it instantly delivered and love being able to carry all my favorite books with me.

They’re comparing the Nook to the 2nd gen Kindle. The new Kindle Wi-fi has faster page turns, more contrast, longer battery life, and also costs under $150.

Of course, a newer Nook is probably just around the corner, but I also prefer Amazon to B&N. I wasn’t ready to give up my dead tree editions until I was sure an e-book reader was something I could read comfortably for hours. I’ve tried e-books on the PC, Pocket PC, Blackberry and they all cause bad eyestrain and shoulder pain (from not having to turn the pages). I tried a friend’s Kindle (2nd gen) and it was very comfortable, but the slow page turns made it annoying. Amazon is promising faster page turns with this new one, so I’m finally ready to buy one and see if I can let go of paper books.

I have an older Sony reader and I like that I can add extra memory. It's also much smaller than the Kindle for transporting it, but the screen is still a nice siz

It doesn't have WiFi but that doesn't bother me as I don't need to download away from a computer.

just wondering how many hours can you read on the EVO before battery run out? I suspect it dont use as much power as playing music, so more than 24hrs?

i dont think the memory card is much of an advantage. The built in card is already large that most ppl will never need a 2nd card. A batteries in the kindle last a month between charges while its probably alot less on the nook as they have a LCD screen at the bottom which uses alot of power

Well, on my days off I used to sell books, the old-fashioned kind, so I'm somewhat familar with the business. Part of my unwillingness to get into the e-book thing is that I can't understand why the prices are what they are (IMHO way too high) when the sellers don't have to deal with print costs, transpo, shipping, warehousing, returns, overhead for bricks-and-mortar stores, etc. IOW, way I figger it, the margins on e-books are purty darn good. Great for the seller, not so great for the customer. Another reason while I'll stick to dead tree editions for a while longer.

BTW, if my take on the margin thing is way off, someone please educate me :)

It will be interesting to see if Obama cancels Christmas this year.

Thanks for that little info. I was having a hard time deciding which color, white or black, to buy. I want the one thats better for reading. Their logo at the top is kinda distracting I think. They should’ve placed it the back
