A VEGETABLE farmer who lived a life of luxury after winning almost RM1mil in a lottery five years ago torched himself when his pot of gold became empty.
The 63-year-old from Serian, Sarawak, known only as Khoo, was reported to have dug a grave at the back of his house before splashing petrol on his body and lighting it, reported Berita Minggu.
The man had won more than RM750,000 five years ago and then reportedly spent up to RM1,800 on a single bet over the years, hoping to strike it big again, the weekly said.
Serian OCPD Deputy Supt Jamali Umi said the police have classified the case as sudden death.
He said the victims nephew had found the man dead in the hole.
A relative, who declined to be named, said Khoo, who never married, had stopped cultivating his farm upon winning the lottery and had spent the money on a new house and several vacations.
But with no new winnings, the barrel soon became empty.
You’ve got to be in it, to singe it...
Build a man a fire and he stays warm for a day
Set a man on fire and he stays warm for the rest of his life
Another low score on an IQ test.
There are a lot of people who can’t handle money who win the lottery in this country
Malaysia. obviously.
Always amazes me that many people who win the lottery blow through it quickly and become sometimes worse off than they were before the windfall.
I know I wouldn’t blow it all. But that’s probably exactly what they thought before they won, too!
That’s why if you could magically transfer all of the money from the rich to the poor, the rich would have it all back, and then some within a few years.
No... it wasn't obvious. You could have taken the extra effort to give the location in your excerpt!
Neal Boortz always sais “The Rich Keep Getting Richer Because They Do Things That Make Them Rich, The Poor Keep Getting Poorer For a Similar Reason”
Probably a prerequisite for playing the lottery in the first place
Magical thinking about Money and Statistics
Well, that is how they got rich, after all. They couldn’t leverage labor and resources to gain wealth if people didn’t lose theirs somewhere else.*
*Disclaimer: I’m not saying that appropriate resource management can’t benefit everyone (as I feel it does), I’m merely saying the elite that we currently have, ALL (or very nearly so) have made their money from the movement of the labor and fruits of the poor/middle class into their hands. Long gone are the days of freedom and the “American Dream,” all growth is quashed except that of nearly unaccountable corporations who leave only enough to irk out a life, through sympathetic government interference and over regulation. A sad situation indeed. Our Founders revolted for far, far more miniscule actions, because they understood the principles behind what was taking place.
+1
It was about $15k USD. But that goes a long way in India. Should have used it to open call center. Could have parleyed in into Billions of Rupees!
No doubt. Some men you just can't reach.
During a statistics course I downloaded 7 years of the Florida lottery winning numbers. A fairly even distribution but not entirely as even as you’d expect. The number 1 had the fewest appearances.
One thing in common among lottery winners though, a very high number go bankrupt after winning.
