Thoughts on a good carry gun (caliber, make) and holster type.

Hey All!

Seems like a bit of a slow news day, so I thought I'd crank out my first vanity.

I've been shooting for a couple of years now (since around October of '08 - go figure) and I'm looking at getting my CCW. I'd like some opinions of caliber / make and also holster options and ramifications.

But isn’t the 22 magnum still a rim fire?

My wife shoots tons of .22lr at the range, and it’s not that awfully rare to get a dud.

Yes, the whole reason for the anemic, limp, feeble, effeminate .25ACP was for a small reliable centerfire cartridge. but there are brands and brands of .22, from the lowly plinking brick to CCI Stingers. The "Shoot at cans all afternoon" stuff does have a dud once in a while, especially in my old High Standard Citation, which could probably use a new firing pin, but I have never had a dud with the CCI or the Remington (Copperhead?) rounds.

It has a round with 5 lead balls, at 10 feet the person is DOA.

I’d use slugs myself.

Haha.."Neatness Counts", huh?

That said, nobody wants a face-full of #8.

Guy I worked with in the early 70s had a creeper come into his house twice. Once in he would open windows and doors for his escape. He seemed to like his girls' room. When someone would wake up and yell, the creeper would run out. The guy took to waiting for him in the family room with his 12 gauge loaded with "bird shot". I asked him later why he used that and he said he didn't want to kill anybody.

One night the guy came back and the homeowner hit him in the side of the face at 3 or 4 feet. The creeper had the effrontery to run out the front door leaving a lot of one side of his face on the family room wall. He died later in the neighbors front yard. The DA made the guy sit on his thumb for months before he officially called it justified. The homeowner was still a mess when I talked to him a couple of months after the shooting. (This happened in Pennsylvania)

Of course but a North American Arms you can fit in your front pocket like a set of keys...believe me if they made a 45 like that I would have that instead...lol.

Otherwise my first choice is always a 45 or the Judge.

Speaking of heavy metal.

You want a fun pistol....that's cheap and even cheaper to shoot?

CZ-52....

I have one...and have turned some local friends onto them also. They love um.....

Yep. Birdshot up close pretty much makes a 2 inch hole all the way through. If you “don’t want to kill anybody,” use a squirt gun. That said, I hope the guy got over it. Sounds like the creeper was a kidnapping, or worse, waiting to happen, and the world is a better place for him not being in it.

Kimber Ultra Carry. A small 1911. Works great.

“Kimber Ultra Carry. A small 1911. Works great.”

I was thinking about that one too. The CCW class I took discouraged 1911s as CCW weapons, but I don’t agree with them.

In fact, it kills me that they stand in judgement on various topics like this, or weaver vs isoscles stance, etc. They should separate their “opinions” from fact. Some of the people in the class had never shot, and will take their word as gospel.

Any gun is better than no gun.
Would suggest a Taurus or Smith hammerless (or shrouded hammer) “snubbie” in 38+P. Lotta good loads for them. I know it doesn’t begin with a “4” but it will work, if you do.

Exactly. Their job is to teach basic pistol safety, basic law, and marksmanship. Too many get caught up in their own bs.

A small 1911 fits shoulder rigs, small of the back holsters, hip holsters, purses, fannypacks, even inside coat pockets.

My favorite range gun is a S&W 686 w/ 4-1/4 barrel.

Too big for carry, but it did teach me to love wheel guns.

An air weight snub nose .357 would also be a good carry gun.

Absolute reliability!

Yup. Revolvers don’t jam or stovepipe.
And, even though it doesn’t begin with “4” some of the .38 and .357 self-defense loads will make a mess of anyone not wearing body armor.

Practice shooting and speed loading, and it will be as good as any itty-bitty auto. (And .38 is cheap to shoot...)

That was a superb post, ExSoldier, containing much useful information

You touch on the fact that ammo supply can be choked off. Always a good idea to stockpile a few rounds for a rainy day.

Ironically, the guns I have taken to the range over the past year have been Warsw Pact, mainly because I could still find cheap ammo to feed them, while .45ACP and 7.62 x 51 were scarce as hen’s teeth.

Well, .38 is “sorta” cheap, relatively, nowadays... :)

But a 9mm is still cheaper yet. I pay around $9,something a box for FMJ .9mms (range ammo) as oppsoed to $13+ for .38. At least that’s the way it is here, in NE Ohio.

How about where you are?

I think 38 is cheaper, but I use .44 spcl, and .44 magnum for my Ruger Blackhawk and Bisleys. When I travel, I stuff a CZ-52 (7.62mm) in my glove box. I’m looking at selling it and trying to by (with wife’s permission) a snubbie in .38. Preferably ported - for her carry. I want to try a Springfield XD in .40, but I think that would be be too big and too heavy. Need something fit in my “fag-bag.”

LOL I started having rainy day epiphany's when REAGAN was President and I started picking up those spare rounds back then -- when it was less expensive to do so.

You started way before I did, but I have enough of a stockpile to get by with. Many was the time that I had to leave my 1911’s at home when I went to the range, because I didn’t want to dip into the ‘rainy day’ stockpile, due to the uncertainty of replacement.

It looks like ammo availability is getting back to normal, although the prices for some are twice what I was paying in the pre-Obama days.
