Word For The Day, Wednesday, August 25, 2010 - carceral
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 08/25/2010 | The Slacker

Posted on 08/25/2010 6:49:49 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

carceral \KAHR-suh-rul\ • adjective

of, relating to, or suggesting a jail or prison

Example sentence:

Every time John walked by the old hospital he was haunted by the abandoned building’s imposing carceral towers and tiny windows

Did you know?
Describing a painting of John Howard visiting a prison in 1787, Robert Hughes wrote that Howard was "the pioneer of English carceral reform" (Time Magazine, November 11, 1985). "Prison reform" might be the more common phrase, but the use of "carceral" was by no means unprecedented. Vladimir Nabokov, in his inimitable prose, described a prison scene in Invitation to a Beheading thusly: "The door opened, whining, rattling and groaning in keeping with all the rules of carceral counterpoint." An adjective borrowed directly from Late Latin, "carceral" appeared shortly after "incarcerate" ("to imprison"), which first showed up in English around the mid-1500s; they're both ultimately from "carcer," Latin for "prison."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with today's WFTD.

If there were any justice and integrity in Washington DC, it would not be a question of whether or not these idiots resign from office, but rather what size room (cell) they would have in their new carceral homes.

No pushing at the door please!

Happy Humpday Everybody!

Only days left until BO's replacement is sworn in.

IT'S ABOUT DANG TIME!!!

Get to class you slackers! I've opened a new classroom, but Dave forgot to get the gradebook from xsmommy. So if you're looking for a grade you'll have to ping her. Secret Garden and Tioga are usually pretty generous with the plusses if you compliment their shapely legs, so you might try submitting your homework to them instead. My secret for getting extra plusses on my A+ from xs will remain a secret between me and her, so you're on your own if you want her to review your work.

Welcome to class students. 18 years ago today, VRWCboy was in such a hurry to enter this world that he wasn't going to wait for us to pack a bag, get in the car, and drive to the hospital. As a result, paramedics delivered him in our bedroom - the same bedroom that MrsVRWC and I still sleep in today.

Instead of worrying about sending Congress to a carceral environment, let's just pound them silly in November When You're Holding a Hammer (everything looks like a nail).

If there was ever a carceral administration, this one even tops the clinton band of liars and thieves, courtesy of the Chicago machine.

It appears that no one who is associated with the Obama Administration is the least bit worried about going to jail. Their attitude is: que carceral, sera.

Anyone else find the new design of the DOJ website to be somewhat disconcerting?

Got to do it right, or you stand a chance of getting carcerallover, instead of finding it early.
