My guess is it barely scraped him tho it could be worse of course.
I carry a little .22 auto in my front pocket nearly every day. I have checked carefully and it always points slightly to the rear of straight out to the side. If it went off, it would not hit me.
I also keep a .22 shot cartridge as the first round in the chamber. It is perfect for snakes, rats etc. If I want to shoot something heavier I simply rack the slide.
