Say any word a thousand times and it loses its meaning. Yet, how could any act punishable by death lose its meaning? I don't care how many times I hear the word murder, it always pretty much holds the same weight as the first time I heard it. The same goes for rape. I heard the word many times and have seen it used superfluously as in: "They are raping the land!" Regardless, when I hear that word, it sparks an internal revulsion.
Treason seems to no longer hold that same revulsion. It is a co-opted word by those guilty of it. It is a word reserved for those who have gone against the government. But, when the government goes against the people in clear violation of the Constitution, the word never appears, or when it does it carries no weight whatsoever. So, one must ask oneself: "Why not?"
Why not, indeed.
A word like treason only holds meaning if it is enforced, if it represents a true and rational threat. Where there is no one to enforce the death penalty aspect to it, there is no meaning. Traditionally, we think of the consequences of treason more than the mere act of it. We might imagine the sneaky, late-night passing of communication between the treasonous agent and the beneficiary, but it is the stark sight of the firing squad that brings home the import of the act.
Another aspect to the act of treason that lends more weight to the word at one time rather than another is the immediacy of threat. When a nation is at war, treason is dealt with differently than when it serves to aid some distant military threat. I'm not sure that it should, but it is a fact. Part of that obviously comes from the lives put in danger dimension to a nation at war and the possibility of war.
In America today, we are at war. Treason is being committed. Lives are being put in danger as a result. This treason is open and clear, almost insultingly obvious, to anyone who cares to look. So, it must be the word that means nothing. I guess we need a new word for it.

Darth is merely pointing out that treason is a capital offense that merits the death penalty in our country. Sadly, we no longer have the spine to carry out that sentence, so any politician who aids our Nation's enemies knows full well there will be no penalty.
While I do not share Darth's love of piano wire, I do support his wish for the death of all traitors in our country. It's common sense, and our unwillingness to employ it is an indicator or how weak-willed we have become as a poeple.
Frankly, if I was ruler, we would run out of rope real quick.

Not to really change the thread, but your comment hit me like a ton of bricks. I take my son to work at 5:00 am every morning. I have the radio on in the car, but ping pong to find music, DJ chatter at that time of day is ridiculous. This morning, Veteran's Day, every station was playing 'peace' music. By that I mean all the stuff from the 60's-90's garbage that is anti-American, anti-military and anti-war. Interspersed with the music was commercials of all the Veteran's Day activities in town. The hypocracy was thick.
None of it has happened by accident. Hilary raved about a “great right wing conspiracy”. For some reason we’ve been afraid to talk about the great left wing conspiracy.

What we are lax in is our ENFORCEMENT. A rape or a murder harms one person, treason harms a Nation and can lead to rape and murder if that Nation falls. Treason, by even my libertarian standards, is the ultimate initiation of Fraud.
Then again, I think violation of USC Title 18 Sec 241/242 needs to be used more often as well.
I get accused of being an anarchist, nothing could be further from the truth. I want a smaller, more rational, code of laws that punish "real damage done" type crimes and to have those laws strictly enforced.
Having a million laws on the books makes real crimes like treason seem lesser by comparison.

No because treason is defined in out Constitution. While laws against sedition come and go, treason (aid and comfort to the enemy in wartime) has never been “repealed” from the Constitution.
Just because Jimmy Carter was unwilling to prosecute the traitors who betrayed American in Vietnam in support of the North Vietnamese Communists (Jane Fonda, the Weather Underground, the Yippies, and others who conspired to stage riots in the streets, burn armories, pledge support to the Viet Cong, assassinate police and congressmen...), does not mean that the crime has become meaningless.
We had traitors in this war too. Nadil Hassan at Ft. Hood was a traitor and he was enabled by a fifth column in our US military who empowered him in the name of political correctness even though they KNEW he was communicating with Al Qaeda and making jihadist death threats against non-muslims.

John Kerry has never been punished for lying to Congress about war crimes or participating in a “peace” group that plotted to assassinate congressmen until support for Vietnam War had waned.
Let me state that I do not support any vigilantism, I seek a prosecution for the crime of treason as defined by the constitution by the powers that are entrusted with such determination.

I don’t think it would rise to the level of treason unless such subtufuge was shown to be a conspiracy between Obama and a foreign power. While Obama may not have been a natural born citizen, or even surrendered his citizenship when he moved to Indonesia, it would need to be established that he is now a legal citizen (and not just someone who returned her and reclaimed surrendered citizenship) who sought to provide aid to a foreign power (enemy). You have to be a citizen to be a traitor, I think.
Now those in Hawaii, Illinois, and DC who may have engaged in a criminal conspiracy to empower a foreigner as President WOULD be considered to be in league with a foreign power/enemy to circumvent our Constitution.
In the Cold War, stateside Communists engaged in espionage and subsidized seditious movements against the government ON BEHALF of the Soviet Union.
Barack COULD be considered a traitor for restoking the Cold War (we were not at war with Russia but he wanted to take up “peace negotiations” and sought the destruction of our own nuclear capabilities even if the Russians are not compliant as well as disclosing our missile locations to foreign inspectors).

I would settle for lethal injection. I used that as sort of analogy to “have the punishment fit the crime”. Treason is truly a heinous act against a country as it leads to the death and suffering of innocents. Your statement echos my position well.

As someone coming late to this bickering, it is clear that nobody called for what you describe.
