The slate computing market is about to explode, with a literal flood of new tablets releasing over the coming months. Many of them will be Android based, running Nvidias Tegra 2 SoC. Nvidia made a big deal about Tegra 2 back at CES 2010, but for some reason, its taken quite a bit of time for anything running the platform to hit the market. Finally, we have one - the Viewsonic G Tablet.

The specs are pretty straightforward; weve got a 10 WSVGA display with LED backlighting, Android 2.2 with a specialized UI skin on top, a 16GB microSD card, 2.4GHz 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.1, a 27 Whr lithium ion battery, and the Tegra 2 SoC. The dual-core Cortex A9 is clocked at a nice, round 1 GHz, and theres 512MB of LPDDR RAM on board. The GPU is Nvidias Ultra-Low Power GeForce GPU and there are separate HD video encode and decode blocks also onboard. But the big deal with Tegra 2, as Anand went over in his first look at the SoC, is Cortex A9. The A9 is an out of order architecture with a relatively short pipeline, so it should be significantly faster than the in-order A8 on a per-clock basis.

ping.
These things have better have an HDMI connector.
Ipad about to take a beating...
Thanks for the post. Trying to decide which tablet to get. Amazon has the Viewsonic for around $450 - just added to wish list :) .....C
Not really with a 10,000,000 head start on the market place. I looked at the viewsonic and its not much more then my sprint evo execpt for size. I am waiting for the acer or asus tablet as it sopposed to be close to the IPAD.
I purchased an IPAD for my wife and she can’t put it down. Mainly plays games on it.
Correct. Apple will leapfrog the competition bigtime. These people are not stupid (except for the iPhone antenna thingy). :-)
This Viewsonic has a USB and a docking connection....so maybe the dock has a HDMI connect.
The display doesn’t get a good review.
Apple iPad rival HP Slate sees demand fizzle at 9,000 units, HP Slate sales top out at 9,000 units, and HP Sells 9,000 Slate 500 Tablets, Twice What It Expected.
/bingo
Apple still sells the Air, has two models of it now, and its only got two or three ports on it, one of which is USB, the others aren’t. When it came out, the bitching was “it can’t take DVDs” etc. The iPad has one port, period, not USB, because the entire world is headed toward wireless.
I’m an underaged codger, so I don’t go for wireless web in the house (maybe if I didn’t live alone I might, but I doubt that), but I believe there are plenty who read that last paragraph and went ballistic probably were using wireless as they read it. :’)
I’d guess that android is going to beat apple.
It’s not going to take very long for the ipad competitors to do more at half the price. Apple still has the better screens.
over the last 12 or so years, google has done a better job than apple. google is poised to beat apple and microsoft.
is there any reason that android can’t be a full operating system, like windows 7?
There are a lot of generic tablets coming out that run android 2.2 - which has flash, while apple doesn’t. in all sizes - 4,5,7,10. You can spend more for the capacitive screen or less for the resistive.
Archos has nifty gadgets at $100.
