Pat Robertson: Pot Isn’t The Devil’s Harvest?
Forbes ^ | December 22, 2010 | Art Carden

Posted on 12/23/2010 6:01:47 AM PST by decimon

Pat Robertson says a lot of things that people don’t like. At the beginning of the year, he blamed the devastating earthquake in Haiti on a supposed pact earlier Haitians had made with Satan (I discuss this here). Robertson is closing the year with something that absolutely shocked me when I heard about it. He has come out against the War on Drugs, or at least against mandatory minimum sentences for marijuana offenses.

And if you oppose laws that supersede US authority, how do you justify the existing federal situation?

Have you ever actually read the Constitution? I don't 'justify' the existing federal situation because it is Constitutionally unjustifiable. Google up "Article 1, Section 8". Read it and then tell me where the enumerated Federal power is to tell adults what they can or cannot voluntarily put into their own bodies.

So any new evil we can concoct

There are no 'new' evils.

You need to go back and re-write your post then.

“We Baptists believe that Jesus turned the water into grape juice at the wedding in Cana.”

You might believe that but there’s no scriptural or historical basis for that belief.

My original post stands. Vices are not sins.

You should know that.

Marijuana existed in Biblical times. It's been used by various cultures for thousands of years in one form or another. So either God knew about it and didn't warn His people about it, or He didn't warn them because He didn't know about it.

Which is it, Ben?

>>One thing's for sure — God prefers that people think clearly. “Be not drunk with wine” is NOT a mere imprecation against fermented grapes, but should be understood to include all mind altering substances — especially narcotics.<<

What was Jesus’ first miracle?

He made water into wine at a party that had run out of wine to drink.

Not only that, he made wine that was superior to what had been served at the gathering earlier.

God does not prohibit the drinking of wine and gathering to party.

God does not want him to become second to anything.

Alcoholism takes one away from focusing on God, not the alcohol. Some folks are able to drink with little impact on their lives...some cannot.

Same is true with all aspects of life whether it be drinking, smoking marijuana, gambling, workaholic, excessive working out in the gym....whatever.

Whatever pulls ones focus from God as the primary source of peace, guidance, happiness in life.

“Vices are not sins.”

What’s the difference between the two?

Marijuana has been cultivated from a mild intoxicant into a dangerous narcotic and man-made drugs such as LSD did not exist in Biblical times. You can't seriously be suggesting that God needs to give humanity an exhaustive laundry list of no-nos.

Now, maybe you are smarter than God. Maybe not. You'll find out some day.

MJ is not a narcotic. And are you saying that if todays MJ were dosage equivalent to MJ in Biblical times it would be alright to smoke?

Wine is a mild intoxicant, too. Why did God feel the need to warn us of drunkeness on wine (imbibing to excess) and not warn us off smoking pot to excess?

You can't seriously be suggesting that God needs to give humanity an exhaustive laundry list of no-nos.

It seems to me that He did give us a list of 'no-no's'. If I recall correctly some old guy hauled some stone tablets down of a mountaintop with them written down for us.

I may be a bit hazy on the details but I seem to recall there were ten of them.

Not one of them, written by God himself remember, says anything like "don't drink too much and don't smoke anything that makes you feel good."

All that other stuff about wine didn't come from God, it came from the Apostles. And the Apostles weren't God, they were men and therefore capable of error.

If God had wanted us to foreswear wine and other intoxicants He could have slipped it into those Commandment thingies and ended all discussion of the matter. But He didn't.

“Marijuana has been cultivated from a mild intoxicant into a dangerous narcotic”

You are using hyperbole. Look up the definition of a narcotic. Yes, it’s stronger now but that doesn’t make it into a narcotic.

Think what you want to about marijuana...it’s utterly absurd..an outrage that you get put into prison for owning it.

And when the Bible says “be not drunk from wine”..means don’t be drunk on “grape juice”?

uh hello pot this is kettle.

Maybe you should read the Bible more circumspectly. How many people do you judge and disdain simply because they enjoy something harmless while you agree w/ Richard Nixon?

No matter how dangerous you think it has become there is a point (after less than 1 joint) where the user can not get any higher. In order to have anything other than mild impairment there would have to be a foreign substance mixed with pot.
IOW you can not overdose on pot anything you smoke after you are high is simply wasted.

Please educate yourself before you spout off.

"Mild" impairment? "a point (after less than 1 joint) where the user can not get any higher"? Not sure I'm buying that.

One thing's for sure -- it is pointless trying to have an meaningful conversation with someone who has been smoking pot. After a while you just have tell them to come back when they aren't addled.

One thing’s for sure — it is pointless trying to have an meaningful conversation with someone who only knows that POT IS ILLEGAL. After a while you just have tell them to come back when THEY’VE DONE SOME RESEARCH.

Here’s a little hint for you sonny boy - not everything the government tells you is just so is just so...
