Here's the deal. I've never been much for any type of whiskey. I have some single malt that's almost gone and I really didn't care that it was (it's taken me years to go through one bottle)...but. I've suddenly found Rusty Nails:
2 parts scotch 1 part Drambuie twist of lemon
Sweet but not cloying like straight Drambuie. Just a really nice sipping cocktail ("sipping"...what a concept). But while I have plenty of Drambuie in the house I'm about out of scotch. So I need a recommendation of a decent scotch for mixing. I don't want swill but I'm not wishing to go broke either.
Help?
drink alone!
Famous Grouse is a good, inexpensive blended scotch.
Blend? Johnny Walker black or Dewars.
Single malt? Cardhu
McNaughton’s, or Yukon Jack.
Dewars never failed me.
Just picked up a bottle of Makers Mark for tonight. If you’re looking for a bourbon cocktail, Maker’s Mark, gingerale and a twist of lemon.
I’m sorry. What are we talking about?
If you can’t afford a real Single Malt, 12 year old whiskey, then you should take a pass on any drink that requires Scotch.
There’s enough of a difference, that I don’t even consider the other stuff to be real Scotch.
I agree. It's also the most popular brand in Scotland.
you might have to ask the chief engineer....he knows alot about scotch and “green” liquids.
I will recommend Dewar’s White Label. It’s not overly expensive, and is acceptable for mixing purposes (isn’t horrible straight either). It tends to be my default for scotch and soda.
Just looked up prices at my local booze market.
Dewar’s White Label $22
Johnny Walker Red Label $20
Cutty Sark $20
J&B Scotch $22
(750 ml all)
For the sake of comparison
Johnny Walker Black $37
Glenfiddich 12 $38
Glenlivet $37
Balvenie $45
Personally I find Dewars and J&B dramatically better than Johnny Red, and Cutty Sark is something I consider undrinkable (I was amazed it was so expensive). I can’t even stand Cutty in a scotch and soda, the concept of it neat is nauseating.
You might want to consider Canadian Whisky, it’s a lot cheaper and not that much different mixed.
Canadian Club 12yr is only $19
Canadian Club 6yr is only $13
Try Lismore. You can get it at BevMo and every now and again I see it at Trader Joe’s. I put it in empty Macallan bottles and serve it to my scotch snob friends, and like most scotch snobs they don’t know the difference.
On the bottom end is something surprisingly adequate: Clan MacGregor.
Is-There-Any-Other-Kind? PING
I second the Grouse.
J&B
or
J Walker
But, you don’t have to be so orthodox about it.
Try hennesy or JD why not?
No need to be timid
Dewar’s White label is my choice for a daily shot. Easy on the palette and wallet
I thought there was something “funny” about your scotch but I was too polite to mention it.
The Famous Grouse - $32 for a 1.75 litre bottle.
The prices you quote are undoubtedly for a 750ml bottle.
