My son has asked me for input/advice as to which compact or sub compact semi auto hand gun to buy in either a 9mm or 40 SW. I am partial to the H & K in a 40 SW configuration with a laser sight. I also like the Sig 226 in a 9mm. What do yall think?

You’re at the top of the food chain with either of those. A bigger bullet is always nice, but modern 9mm ammo is very good.
I’d say go with the one you like the fit, ergonomics, and trigger on best.

Lasers and red dots are, for training, sort of a modern version of an old technique of Ed McGivern’s (probably the most proficient revolver shooter of all time) in the 30’s. He suggested putting a dot of red paint on a mirror, lining up the muzzle of the revolver on it, and dry firing at increasing speed until you were steady.
Given he put 5 shots in a playing card at 15 feet in 2/5 of a second out of a S&W .38 revolver in 1934 he might have a point.
I have a Sig 226 9mm but I want that H & K 40 like a hog wants slop. That 40SW round packs a punch.
A SIG P226 is a full sized gun; I have one. If you have smaller hands, like I do, the SIG is a good fit. Instead of the P226, go with a SIG P229. It’s a compact size pistol. I also like Kahr pistols; they’re small and very flat, but pricey. However, if you want good stopping power, and a compact size, it’s hard to beat a single action 1911 45ACP ( as mentioned above)in either Commander size or a more compact version. Colt, Kimber, and Springfield Armory (to name a few makers) make good 1911’s. Kimber came out last year with a bobtail version of the 1911 to improve concealability.
.45 he’ll want out of the 9mm first time he tries a .45
Just save some time and money.

I’ve shot and enjoyed a SIG 225 (the single stack version of the 226)and thought it was a great gun.
No experience with that particular H&K, although I do have a fondness for their funky P7 series (referred to as a “staple gun” by Jeff Cooper, as reported to me by the honorable FReeper Squantos).
I’m actually a .38 Super fan, when it’s loaded close to the 125 grain .357 levels.

I could not disagree any more. Which just goes to show how much personal preference has to do with this subject.
This tells me he needs to forget the .40 unless his wife has relatively large hands and has experience with the sharp recoil of this cartridge. The overwhelming majority of women will not find the .40 to be an experience they care to repeat with regular range time.

I did some R&D work with a former Delta Operator who swore by Glock for two reasons. One, it was reliable with whatever he could find, and two, he could throw it out of the bus window while getting out of Dodge without regrets.
I don't know what he would have thought of the XD, he bought the farm in Iraq in '04.
I agree with his thinking. The protagonist in my new book carries a Glock for those very reasons. And after you throw one out the bus window (or overboard) you can get one just like it anywhere, anytime just about.
