Army Sets Sights on New Rifle
Wall Street Journal ^ | February 2, 2011 | NATHAN HODGE

For the first time in almost 50 years, the U.S. Army wants to replace the standard rifle shouldered by hundreds of thousands of frontline troops around the world.

The service this week advertised its interest in a new weapon that would incorporate futuristic sights and other advances in rifle design and be able to handle improved ammunition.

The gun would potentially supplant the M4 carbine, a shorter-barrel version of the M16, the Army's main infantry weapon for decades.

Operations in Afghanistan—where troops often engage the enemy over long distances—have rekindled debate over the quality of the Army's standard-issue rifles and their reliability in dusty, primitive conditions. An Army report on a 2008 battle in Wanat, Afghanistan, cited soldier complaints about jamming and overheating M4s, in particular. Nine servicemen died in that fight.

Critics have also raised concerns about the range and lethality of the 5.56 mm cartridge of the M16/M4.

M4s are not a toy. A lot of our enemies have been killed with that weapon.

It does the job it was designed for very well. The job has changed.

Sweet. I thought of an Uzi carbine or something in that class, but opted to bring an M1 into the 21st century for a lot less $$

That's my bang-around-in-the-Jeep weapon.

Not bloody likely, unless there’s a revolution, Section 922(o) will still be with us, forbidding us mere citizens the “privilege” of owning a post-’86 full auto. No doubt we’ll sell a boatload to Mexico so that their drug hangs can kill more of us gringos to grease the skids for the reconquista.

Would be nice to find out when he was going to be in Times Square and hack the Sony Zombotron there to display video ads for rifles.

At a local shooting club I’ve seen guys hit consistently at 600 yds with the AR15. Of course they had upgraded the barrel, trigger, and hand loaded their ammo.

Yeah, its like DeJa Vu all over again.
Just issue lever action 30-30's and be done with it.Too much testing, research and committee judgment. They've had good battle weapons presented numerous times and still no decision.

Somebody just say "YES" and get it done. And the caliber should start with a .3 .

Guns,
I don’t have any guns.
They fell out of the bass boat on a fishing trip in very deep water.
I’m not sure which lake we were on at the time.....

The only thing I might ever hunt these days would be urban zombies coming over the back fence if the SHTF in the Big Apple. I think my Saigas (12 ga. & .223) won’t let me down.

I was shooting one day down at the river, and this old like 98 year old WWII vet shows up with an M1 garand and his family.

The guy was frail but he loved that garand. I would huck a target in the river and “kapooey!” he would blow the **** out of it with open sights then chuckle *Heh Heh...one shot one kill, Heh Heh*

Comical old gentleman.
