Instead of singing the lyrics “O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming,” Xtina sang the line “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming.”

Aguilera’s representatives sent Speakeasy this statement from the singer: “I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”

Somebody send the self esteem ambulance to her pad. This is America and we all know what’s most important.

Whoever made the talent decisions on this year's superbowl entertainers needs to be strapped to one of those "bombs burtsing in air".

As soon as I saw who was going to sing the national anthem, I knew what kind of awful mess was going to come out.

Feel her love for this country? No, it looked like she was trying to show off with all the extra flourish, and lost her place. I'll give her credit for good showmanship and recovery after botching singing her national anthem at the super bowl, though. It's just too bad that she didn't put as much importance on singing the right words as she did on showcasing her vocal prowess.

You got that right! They don’t get paid, but get expenses for them and all their entourage. The NFL should have paid a professional to sing the anthem with the pride it deserves to be sung with. Someone commented that yodeling the anthem should be against the law. I agree wholeheartedly. If you can’t sing it properly, you shouldn’t be allowed to sing it at all. Maybe they should hire Shania Twain to sing it. She’s canadian and she probably knows what it’s supposed to sound like.

“Christine and the Black Eyed Pea’s were a microcosm of 1600 Penn. All glitz and messing up all the basics.”

Wow, my thoughts exactly as I watched a full minute of half time torture. And it is bad enough to not know the words to our Anthem, but to add a million extra usless notes makes me sick. I would be much more impressed if someone sang our Anthem as written with precision on each note.

Last night just showed the continued destruction of America by the left. Disgusting.

Pure, absolute un-American assault on all that is good about our country. There can be NO excuse for that crap. My kids can sing it better and more reverently than that moron. Between her trashing the National Anthem and that hideous half-time show, it’s becoming more and more attractive to watch the Puppy Bowl.

The power-to-be at the head of the NFL should be fired . . . this madness continues year after year.

I’m waiting for a rock and roll concert to have a football game during intermission, just to have it all make sense.

Shame on the NFL for continuing to drown us in such crap during half times of all playoff and championship games.

It’s what they get when they ask a pop idol to sing the National Anthem (IMHO).

I actually thought she has the type of voice where she could have done a good job with the National Anthem. Underneath the "pop" she has a decent voice. Its a shame she flubbed this.

Worst Rendition of the National Anthem Ever.
She ought to be forbidden to appear on national TV after that hideous performance.

If she loved her country, she would sing the anthem with respect for the country and not trying to promote herself.

The National Anthem before sporting events has become nothing more than a "Look at me!" moment of promoting narcissistic nitwits. And that includes Whitney Houston's version after 9-11, which far too many people hail as wonderful.

Why is it that nobody ever "personalizes" O Canada or God Save the Queen or any other country's National Anthem?

Just have a band play it or pipe the music over the loudspeakers and have the crowd sing it.

Even FNC this morning had a "singer" do her version of the Anthem. I can't hit the mute button fast enough.

Last night was my best Super Bowl ever!

I watched a movie until about 8 while recording the SB. Then I watched and fast forwarded through the BS of Sideline interviews, network promos, Christeen Aguileria's debacle (Hey, if she can eff up the National Anthem, I'll eff up her name - I had no idea she even screwed up until I heard the news this AM) and the halftime stupidity on parade show.

I watched the commercials because they are usually very good for the SB. And did I ever regret watching the Doritos commercial. BLEECH! AND - the team I wanted won!

I'm sure they'll refund your ticket price eh!

Too many of you people who've never stood before a huge crowd and lost your place are kvetching.

Try it some time ~ then do it ~ and get back to us later.

I'll be the judge of what complaints are valid and which are just foul breath from losers.

?? You lost me. Not calling you a racist, but I’m not sure what you’re trying to say...Christina Aguilera is black? At first glance, I thought it was Cyndi Lauper standing in for Christina. Too bad it wasn’t, she probably would have done a better job...

Why would you have her sing "the Mexican" anything?

Really, we need your explanation for that.

Best Post I have read so far.

Indeed she is a doper. she looked like she just got out of bed and as a sex symbol she looked more like a 14th street hooker.

Reminded me of the scene in The Naked Gun, when Frank Drebin tried to sing the National Anthem.

At least Leslie Nielsen had an excuse, he was Canadian.

It was sad and pathetic. She has been singing it since she was 7. I agree with you, skip the flourishes and just sing it proudly like it is supposed to be. We don’t give a hoot about artistic license and there shouldn’t be any taken with OUR anthem. If she couldn’t remember the words, maybe she should write them on her hand like Sarah or use a teleprompter like Berry. Then she could just follow the bouncing ball while following the music along.

It's more important that the troops in the field know we care ~ and that's what those celebrities are telling them with their presence.

This was a football game anyway ~ not a singing contest.

Now I know I am old. I didn’t even know who she was and now I hope I NEVER hear her AGAIN!

Well, I didn't hear her, but by the looks of reports, I will consider myself lucky. I missed the halftime as well, and guess I was lucky twice during the stupid boll. <<-- done on purpose

If you can say "salsa" and know how to order "meat" or "bean" burritos, you could be mistaken for an illegal too.

Frankly, getting caught at the local Burger King on Saturday afternoon is a dead giveaway.

“she didn't put as much importance on singing the right words as she did on showcasing her vocal prowess.”

And that was quite overdone also.

Many many times, less is more.

Better to sing it as if you are holding back that amazing vocal talent, just being a pure voice, and THEN on the last few verses, you cut it loose a little....

She was ‘showing off’ right from the get go. Left her, artistically, no room to maneuver and nowhere left to go to.

I blame Jose Feliciano for this, he started this crap in the 1968 World Series.
