I thnk I was just targeted by a fraudster

I was jut rnning a few errands and ran into a store while my 81 year old mother waited in the car. Well, a big sedan pulled into te next slot and a guy got out and started poking all around and then rapped on her window and compained about damage to his car and insisted that it was caused by mine. My mom told him there wasno way that was possible and to go away but didn't mention calling the cops. (I would have) The guy took down my plates and left yelling about lawyers.

Does anybody know about anything like this going on in the fraud community and what should I do now? Again, I wasn't there when this happened and i'm getting the story from my mom who was sitting in the car.

First of all, did you actually see the confrontation? Second, does your mother gamble? Play the horses? The lottery? Is it possible she’s in on the scam?

What everyone else is saying....Yes, contact the police.
Best thing is to go to the town that this incident happened with the perp and visit the police station. If they want to take a look at the car - file your statement there.

If this just happened - contact the police now so the officers can keep an eye out for the vehicle in town.

Backing up an off-ramp was one scam. You’d be exiting the freeway and there’d be this car seemingly waiting for traffic to move on. When you got close, say about ten feet or so the car would suddenly backup into you. The driver would get out accusing you of ramming his car. Cop shows up and yep, looked like you rear-ended the guys car.

No this isn’t an intentionally racist statement, but was the other car filled with illegal aliens? This kind of scam goes back decades. With “ALL” of the “Victims” needing medical attention,i.e a quick cash settlement. They have the scam set up with a crooked lawyer, a doctor who gets a cut of the proceeds, chiropracters, etc.

"Turn on the date stamp, if your camera has one, and take a bunch of pictures of your car. If you damaged his car, yours should have damage as well. File them with the police report others have suggested."

This is what you should do. It would have been nice to get photos of the other vehicle before the guy possibly enhances the damage. Make sure your insurance company has this info so that they can flag it for SIU.

Why would anyone sitting in a car which is not moving, accept that they ‘caused’ damage to a car that was moving ?

Did your mom have a cell phone, while sitting in the car?

Learned my lesson the hard way many years ago.

While staying in a seedy hotel (all my young wife and I felt we could afford and long before we owned a credit card) upon checking out and getting into our pick-up another vehicle and I backed into each other simultaneously. Being the young driver, I felt mostly responsible and paid some cash to the other driver, much older than myself and a resident of that town...

Unfortunately, I realized after departing that place that the other driver was there for either drugs or prostitution and if I had simply held my ground and insisted on going into the lobby and calling police (after taking his plate number) he probably would have been the one shelling out cash.

Learn from my mistake and always call the police in a “fender” bender.

Damn.

I would certainly notify the police, and file a traffic report, with your grandmother as witness.

Also, if you have a decent insurance company, I’d give them a heads up, too. I have an excellent relationship with my auto insurance agent, and would certainly tell her about this, just in case a claim is filed.

I had something like this happen a few years ago, but it turned out different. I opened my door and the door lightly tapped the one beside me. They guy got out and started yelling about how I had damaged his car. I wet my finger tips, reached down and wiped away the dirt that had been transferred and the damage magically disappeared. He continued to yell and threatened to call the cops and I just told him that “they don’t investigate people for touching your car”. He got back in and roared out of the parking lot screaming at me.

Take pictures of your car with a time and date stamp... if your car damaged his there would be his paint and scratches etc.
File a police report.
Insist on an investigation.
For all you know this may not be the first time he’s done this.

By having the police respond you get it on the record in case a fake tries to do a lawsuit later. It also means any security cameras can be checked.
Don’t delay, get it on record.
