So does anybody have a Xoom yet?

Posted on 03/01/2011 8:33:54 PM PST by Lurkina.n.Learnin

I'm thinking about getting a tablet and wondering whether the xoom would be better than the Ipad.

Looking at it the specs things like battery life and display size look pretty similar to the iPad.

Extras include 4G upgradeable and the camera.

I wouldn't get a tablet that doesn't have an application infrastructure already existing like iPad and the Xoom.

The one concerning thing with the Xoom is some kind of activation requirement on the Verizon 3G network. Don't know how that works, but you should figure out the details before buying one of these things.

As an iPad user there are definitely some limitations to tablets, but they also have some great capabilities. They are awesome for surfing, playing games, media, and travel. Serious computing, not so much, but how often are you really power pointing, excelling, etc?

One thing I really wish my iPad had was the camera. As a work road warrior I really enjoy video chat with the kids. I got one of my kids an iPod Touch just for that.

I think satisfaction with a tablet is based on you expectations. If you think you are going to be able to replace your computer you will be disappointed. I have been pleasantly surprised with my tablet. Our computer use has gone way down and been replaced with tablet use.

Just bought a Galaxy Tab and love it. I’m a Mac user, bit very impressed with this device.

My husband bought me an iPad for Christmas. I am writing this response from it. I absolutely love it. I do a lot of work online and it is everything I need. I don’t turn my computer on for days on end. My iPad takes care of so many of my requirements.

I’m waiting for the BlackBerry Playbook due out later this month. Great specs and full Web experience with Flash built in s you don’t go to the mobile sites. It’s the same size as the Galaxy Tab but not tied to a data plan with wifi and BlackBerry tethering so there’s no need for an extra data plan. It also has HD display, 1GB RAM and 1GHZ dual core processor. I played with one at the CES and it’s incredible.

Just recognize the tablet for what it it, a machine that is capable of delivering the medium of information and entertainment efficiently.

It’s not meant to be a productive machine. If that is your expectations, get a laptop, because once you add an external keyboard, that is what you have.

I’m waiting for the Playstation Suite to be released. All them Playstation games makes the tablet worthwhile.

Thinking of the Toshiba tablet.

Here is a comparison between the iPad and Zoom. The only problem here is that the iPad 2 comes out tomorrow and this comparison is with the iPad that came out 1 year ago.

My bad Xoom and not Zoom! LOL! Think it’s time for bed. Looking forward to seeing the new iPad 2 tomorrow.

Personally I own an iPhone 4. Love it! It’s incredible. Apple products are just a lot more user friendly than Microsoft. Plus Apple has the most Apps (applications).

Oh and for the record I have a Dell Lap Top with Windows 7 Professional. Windows 7 Professional is great and easier to use than XP.

Apple is announcing the iPad2 tomorrow. That doesn’t mean it’s actually available for sale tomorrow. Could be months before available. Word is Apple made some late additions that may delay ability to get certain components manufactured to spec and shipped to the assembly factories. It may not be available for 1 to 3 more months.

But by tomorrow, we should have a good idea of what improvement will be in Ipad2 and how it will compare to other recently released tablets.

Anyone looking to buy a tablet right now should at least wait to see what’s coming in the ipad2 and then figure out what is best compared to others like Samsung galaxy tab and Motorola Xoom.

I've been investigating this also. Leaning towards the Tab. Be aware that all Galaxy Tabs are different. Internal memory varies. This will effect speed. T-Mobile has the best non-contract price today, $450.

ATT has: 592Mb(ROM) + 512MB(RAM) + 128MB(One D-RAM) + 16GB (User Memory), + microSD slot.
T-Mobile: 512MB(ROM) + 512MB(RAM) + 128MB(One D-RAM) + 16GB (User Memory), + microSD slot.
Sprint & Verizon: 512MB(ROM) + 512MB(RAM) + 128MB(One D-RAM) + 2GB (User Memory) + 16GB microSD installed.
Sprint & Verizon's Tab is NOT RECOMMENDED.

Purchased a Archos 43, Android 2.2 for my son. Smaller internal memory @ 256mb + 16gb user memory. $250. Was $220 at Amazon last week. Front & back cameras.

Archos also offers other Android 2.2 tables:
28, 32, 43, 70 & 10.1. Numbers indicate screen size: Archos 43 = 4.3” diag. screen.
Archos 70 comes in 2 flavors: 16gb flash (+32gb micro SD, not included) & 250gb HDD. These run 1/2 the price of Galaxy Tab. No back camera on the 70, which is keeping me away from buying one.

These can access the Android market with an easy patch. www.archos.com, http://archosfans.com/forums/, http://forum.archosfans.com/

Advantage of Archos, they will play .AVI files & .epub.

(disclosure: I work for a company owned by Toshiba)

I have Android 2.2 on my Dell Streak 5. It is rock solid and I’m NOT locked into a proprietary application like iTunes. The Streak 5 is perfect for travel, movies and light internet use.

I think 7” is a sweet spot for handheld tablets. We have an iPad as well and it is a 2 handed operation. I may get the Streak 7 this summer.

If it has a keyboard its got ipad beat.

My wife got me a case w/ built-in keyboard for Christmas. Folds out, bluetooths to the iPad. Brookstone but I've seen them from another source.
Solves my one complaint w/ the iPad. I have 'heavy' fingers and tend to type w/ my fingers on the screen. The screen is so sensitive I'm always typo'ing. The case solves that.

Just got the Xoom and so far I love it (typing on it right now). It’s a bit of a work in process (waiting on Flash, 4G, MicroSD), but for what it is now, it’s pretty awesome. I also have a Droid X, and all my paid apps downloaded and work perfectly. Now if we could just get Netflix on Android without using PlayOn.

The cheapest option is to pickup a $249 Nook Colour and root that puppy with FroYo. It’s a very servicable device for browsing and apps at an unbeatable price. The alternate OS is mounted to an sd card, so it’s a nearly risk free and painless procedure.

Personally, I,m holding out for an an HP Touchpad, but that’s because I love the webOS ecosystem.

What about the new Toshiba tablet that’s supposed to be coming out? I’m more interested in that one, as it’s specs look to be very similar to the Motorola Xoom but without the outrageous pricetag of the Xoom.

Ebay is loaded with “Android Tablets” for $99. Are these knock offs or are they something else entirely?
