Arlington police have arrested and charged a 24-year-old man in connection with the fatal church attack that left a pastor dead and his assistant severely injured.

Records show that Steven Lawayne Nelson, 24, was booked into the Arlington city jail Saturday afternoon. He was charged with capital murder.

Authorities initially believed that Nelson was in Dallas but then they got word that he was headed back to his apartment in Arlington where he lived with his mother. Members of the U.S. Marshal’s fugitive task force were called in to help with taking him into custody.

Earlier today, officials spotted someone they believed to be Nelson go inside the apartment. Police then surrounded the apartment. Law officers then saw him on a back patio, which was surrounded by a high fence.

Nelson spotted law officers and then ran back inside the apartment. He initially refused to come out, but ultimately a member of the task force convinced him to voluntarily surrender.

Authorities also recovered the assistant’s Mitsubishi Galant that was taken by the attacker or attackers during Thursday’s slaying at the NorthPointe Baptist Church in North Arlington.

Arlington police were still searching Saturday for additional clues in the death of the Rev. Clint Dobson, who was found dead about 4 p.m. Thursday inside the NorthPointe Baptist Church in the 2000 block of Brown Boulevard. Dobson’s assistant, Judy Elliott, was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth where she was recovering from her injuries. Elliott was listed in stable condition.

On Saturday, authorities stormed a unit at the Woodbridge townhomes, just a few blocks for the NorthPointe church on Brown Boulevard. Richard confirmed that they detained one person there, but declined to release additional information.

although I do have to add suburban whites, rural blacks, limosine liberals, and many who do sit in pews on Sunday morning, in addition to some who preach the word to the list of those who need to understand what is not being told.

There is a big difference between hearing the word of God, and searching, understanding, and believing in it.

I’m hearing the Father’s heart. Many still need to know their identity in Christ. Thanks for your post.

“True story. My wife was in the hospital with our first baby. She shared a room with a woman who said the nurses had named her baby. She said “The bracelet on her arm says her name is ‘Fee-mal-ee’.” (female)”

We had a job applicant at my place of work back in the early 90’s with the same name. I was laughing about it at the time but then I realized that no one cared enough about her to give her a name. Sad.

Apparently APD is not releasing his booking photo because his appearance is evidence. What we believe that to mean is that Clint must have got some shots in, so good for him.

Nelson was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in October in Dallas and was sentenced to eight years of probation, according to public records. Then in November he was sent to a state facility that houses defendants who violate their parole, community or mandatory supervision conditions - and was released less than two weeks ago, according to Texas Department of Criminal Justice records.

Since 2005, Nelson has served some jail time for convictions of property theft, burglary and unauthorized use of a vehicle in the Dallas and Fort Worth area, records show.

Robbery...robbing a church, killing the pastor and wounding one other...that is just sad.

You know he who will not be named is involved.

Does the Wayne/Lee/Ray rule apply for a Lawayne?

Hmmm...that's a very subtle case.
