A flock of ten flamingoes have met a brutal end at a zoo in Eskilstuna in eastern Sweden after a curious anteater broke into their compound and clawed them to death, leaving a further five birds nursing injuries.

I'd say "present" and not "future."

That's a good point. I was meaning the future as relative to the past; that is, if you're in 1814, then 1997 is the future. But that's rather garbled.

If I'm in 1814, the notion of what constitutes an "unbirthday" takes on a whole new meaning.

And there’s no flush toilets.

Not “no”, merely few. Toilets with running water existed in Roman Empire times.

Outhouses are underrated, anyway. They were considered valuable during Civil War times, and not just for their relief factor.

*shudder*

In North Korea, there were quotas for city dwellers to deliver their euphemisms to the appropriate bureaucracy for use as fertilizer. Dreadful if one were “irregular,” I’m sure.

For a more pleasant aspect, composting toilets, otherwise known as waterless toilets, are available which work to diminish consumption of water as well as to provide a source of nutrient rich material for growing plants.

As supposed space-travelers, intent on the necessity as well as efficiency of recycling programs and procedures, we would do well to be conversant with such equipment.

Yes, we’ve discussed those devices more than once ... but there is still the problem of my HOA regulations.

We do have a compost barrel now, although I haven’t begun to ferment fertilizer yet.

"there is still the problem of my HOA regulations."

That right there is the primary, or perhaps even only, reason I would suggest that you consider moving, even just a few miles away.

Get enough acreage, and when the kids fly the nest, they can build another nearby.

Because of HOA regulations, you are not allowed to adjust your lifestyle to suit a small planet. That is perverse, (and I know what perverse is, certifiably).

I love them! And couldn’t wait to put them on!

A drought does give me an idea for an end the world scenario.
So does a draught.

"A drought does give me an idea for an end the world scenario."

I'd want it to incorporate the in-your-face-ness of being caused by efforts to counteract "global warming".

For example, efforts to execute "carbon sequestration" in the deep ocean produced an unexpected and unpredictable result, causing Earth's water to disappear into crustal rock and produce a near-desert planet.

All this talk about draughts made me thirsty.
I had to go get slaked.

These socks were make for walkin’, and that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these socks are gonna walk all over you ...

Bill and Tom are supposed to be back to the church at 3:20. DP’s gone to get them, and I put Frank to bed.

Since the socks were smashed when they got here, I don’t expect them to rise up and get on with any mischief.
