The Masters: Tiger's charge proves he's back, once and for all
CBS Sports ^ | 04/10/2011 | Mike Freeman

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- There first needs to be a simple, declarative statement to settle something once and for all, an answer to a question that's been asked for days, if not months. The statement is this: Tiger Woods is back.

He is. It's official. He didn't win the Masters, but after a courageous, almost history-making performance, it's impossible not to declare the career of Woods reinvigorated from the waitress-chasing dead.

Everything was present. The charge was there. He made up seven shots in eight holes, including an eagle on eight that led to the loudest roar of the weekend. Check. Some early leaders began to fall apart once Woods closed in. Check. Rory McIlroy had a bit of premature coronation, Jean Van De Velde-ing into people's lawns. Check, check, check.

McIlroy's falter was Woods’ gain. Woods caused McIlroy to panic. No question about it.

The caddy for Woods' playing partner shook Woods' hand at the conclusion of Woods' stunning round of 67 and said to Woods: "You're back."

You're back. Yes, he is. He is.

With all due respect to winner Charl Schwartzel, it was Woods who was the biggest story of the Masters despite finishing tied for fourth and four shots back with a 278.

You had to see it in person to understand. On the course, the gallery was throaty and chaotic. People could barely contain themselves as Woods made his run. Woods was fist-pumping again. His attitude was nasty again. Some of the staff at Augusta -- those who cook the food and empty the trash -- were mesmerized, sneaking a peak at the large television screen in the press room to watch Woods.

It's possible there hasn't been such emotion for a player who didn't win in the history of the Masters.

“While Tiger made a great charge on the front nine, he spit the bit coming in. Short par putt miss on 12, short eagle putt miss on 15.”

Not trying to be a wise guy, but seriously - how many “short eagle putt misses” have you or almost anyone ever had at the Masters? Did you see the approach shot he stuck to “choke” on ... I’m sorry, it’s hard to say this ... but, the “short eagle putt choke?” REALLY?

Sorry, another one of my pet peeves... Judging others is what we all have to do or risk major problems.

I do not want to get into a religious argument with you, but you do have to judge other people every time you meet someone. To do differently is to neglect your responsibility. I’d bet if you have kids that you judge your potential baby sitters with a very close eye..(so to speak).

You sir are one of those hypocrites that I read about that seems to only spout biblical phrases without noticing that you do the opposite.

Sooo... don’t give me your creepy religious crap and go on with your self-absorbed life!

The “old” tiger would have been in the last group and not have needed to make up 8 strokes on Sunday.

“In his interviews, responses to the gallery, his on course profanity and his walk up the 72nd hole, Woods proved only one thing. He is still an ass.”

Master Chief Duntno referred to him as the “Ted Williams of golf.”

All he has to do is win a few more majors and start screaming at the press HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW????”

Who is the ginormous douchenozzle that wrote this illogical tripe?

A 26 year old wins his first major by shooting 14 under and he's not the biggest story?

The 14 under round included an eagle 2 on a front nine par 4 and birdieing the last 4 holes on the course and we are supposed to believe that the fourth place finisher who couldn't hole a 5 foot eagle putt is the biggest story?

GMAFBreak.

Clearly the author wants a look at Tiger's little black book and is giving him a little somethin'/somethin' in hopes of a peek.

Tigger is only several months into a new swing coach(Sean Foley), so results today had to be encouraging for him after being inconsistent for quite awhile.....

Back?....hard to say to what level. More competitive I think that he will be as he comes to trust the swing changes.

Putting in Hogans later years got tougher also....Hogan even advocated putts only be valued 1/2 a stroke each :)

Enjoy......but without caring who..I’d much prefer golfers from the good old USA to dominate......can stomach Aussies, tolerate S.Africans.....but the Euro’s are too much.

You and I are not the issue, we weren't on the course...Tiger was, and if he was "back" he would have holed it.

Period.

I understand their "wants"....

But, IMO the fact is..Woods wasn't the main story at all. But that's the MSM for you....

Pretty good Barack Hussein Obama analogy...there somewhere. Although B.H.O. talent was/is reading TOTUS..and sounding good. Whereas Woods..actually has a talent that is not fake, and worth something.

If memory serves, didn’t he finish in 4th place last year also? 4th place again this year. How does that equate to him being “back”? The sycophantic media is so disgusting, whether it be sports, politics or whatever.

Still can’t put together 3 good rounds, let alone 4. He won’t come close again in any majors this year is my prediction.

You’re right. I just never heard the expression “choked on an eagle putt before.” Maybe because I never had a ball that close to the pin on par five - and neither have most people. It’s kind of like a “missing the bulls eye by a foot from eight hundred yards” complaint.

As I said, you can tell how far a former star has fallen by the rediculous arguments people will make to build up a 4th-place finish.

“Well, he did a lot better than some 51-year-old blogger could do!!”

If we were measuring “champions” by my abilities, we’d have about 150 million world-class golfers.

Give me a couple of months, and a cushy job like President where I have plenty of time to work on my game, and I might be able to beat you. That is, if you haven’t played golf before. Otherwise, I might be hard-pressed. I do own my own clubs though — the curse of being left-handed and short, if you want to play golf you should probably own your own clubs.

As I tell my children — if you can’t be number one, strive to be better at everything than everybody who doesn’t really care about that thing. Let it be on your gravestone “He was pretty fast for a slow guy”.

Is Tiger “back” because he had his best round of golf in a long time, and still didn’t even have the best round of the day? I remember when he used to WIN TOURNAMENTS.

Freeman runs hot & cold on Woods. Freeman is black and has Obama kneepads and has hammered Tiger for not openly supporting obama.

Freeman also seems to to forget Tiger's 2010 Masters.
Tiger finished in the same spot in the 2011 Masters as he did in the 2010 Masters. He scored better(11 under) in 2010.

too many players ave caught up....and the young guns have no fear of Tiger. It makes no difference if Tiger is back or not.

I don't know, a reporter said he looked like a tight end wandering around Augusta. What that means is that he has been chummy with Dr Galea again, which usually happens when he goes through another "swing change"

I (for one) can not watch him without thinking about his actions regarding his beautiful wife and children.

The fickle golf gods might have a special torment in store for the Tiger. Just out of reach, ever so close, almost had it.

Aside from the rather stunning use of the man's name four times in a single sentence, this whole article sums up what the PGA and networks want you to believe. They will do anything they can to pump up this man.

I will watch the PGA -- if I know he's not playing.

The networks want him back for ratings - nothing else. That is just another reason why this is a farce. They want the money - we want some justice. He is a snake!

Seems like we are winning...

You said that right. The PGA created this false image and it sold big time. They knew what he was medically up to...probably financed it.

I only tuned it when it was apparent he would not win...and I watch almost every tournament. What an exciting masters, and I only watched the last three holes.
