If You're Not Married by 40, You're a Freak

We have moved far past the time when an unmarried woman over 35 was branded an "old maid" or when unmarried men were "swinging bachelors," but after seeing the disaster of the marriage between Huma Abedin and Congressman Anthony Weiner, one does have to wonder if the old adage about men over 40 who have never been married is true. Is it a dating red flag?

There is something to be said for marriage. Being in a marriage, whether it ends or stays together, usually means you have some experience with compromise, the ability to love and be loved, and some familiarity with the concept of sharing. "Never-marrieds" on the other hand? Who knows why they're unmarried?

In asking around, it seems the cutoff age between it being cool and it being a red flag is roughly 35 for men and 40 for women.

Of course, nothing is sure-fire and there are as many extenuating circumstances as there are marriages on Earth. But it's a good rule of thumb, when dating, to recognize that a person who has reached a certain age and never had a relationship last longer than a couple months is probably harboring some issues.

Marriage? Maybe not. Maybe they don't want to get married or just don't play musical chairs all that well. There are reasons they may not have walked down the aisle, though in Weiner's case, it probably WAS a red flag. Still, most men over 40 who have had at least one or two long-term relationships that haven't worked out are still marriage material, but those who haven't even had a girlfriend? It's a problem.

We learn something with every relationship we're in. No one would argue that the older you get, the harder it is to compromise. It is. So if you marry young and you compromise together, you get used to that. Someone who has made it to 40 without having to make those compromises and learn and grow with someone would likely be much more rigid in their thinking.

Women over 30 complain all the time that there are few good guys without baggage who are over 30 out there. And it's likely true. There are some good men who stay single, but coupling off whether by marriage or just a long-term relationship is kind of the "norm." So stepping outside of that does make you a bit of a freak.

That said, it isn't fair to not give a guy a chance because of some arbitrary cutoff. There is always the exception to every "rule," right?

Do you think a man or woman over 40 who has never been married is a freak?

A guy who’s not married by 35-40; there’s a reason. Outwardly, some of theses guys seemed normal; but it is not normal for a guy not to be married by then.

Definitely not normal but not necessarily a freak. I've known men who not being in an environment where many eligible women were available, simply looked at others around them, looked at the statistics and said, odd's are if I marry, I'll also divorce. If their life is basically ok, remaining single and more, or less content is better for them than marrying and running a good chance of becoming miserable.

I was 34 ...Got married in Tokyo to the one and only wife of my life ...Some of my male friends’ wives in the States used to suspect I was gay just because I was not married ...Ironic now that I think about it ...the ones that did suspect are all divorced now ...We’ll be celebrating our 25th next Feb.

What if you’ve been married four times?

(Rhetorical question!)

What if you're twice married, NOT a celebrity, and won't hit 40 until December?

Or you can get raw with these strings. Either way, the violin is sweet yet lethal.

Do it!

Shouldn't that be the other way around? Namely: 35 for women and 40 for men? After all, biology is destiny. The author has apparently never heard the expression "shelf-life."

A man could reasonably argue that, stereotypically, going to college (and studying seriously), making a career, and accumulating the necessary wealth to support a family have delayed his entrance to the "market."

A woman who has waited until menopause has (almost) set in, however, obviously has "issues," since the delay will have significantly degraded one of her primary functions.

Regards,

If I want companionship I’ll buy a dog. They cost less than a wife and no one really cares if you take it out to the woods and shoot it, as long as you have a good reason.

Yes, very odd how the author of this piece seems to think that it's stranger for men to be unmarried at an "advanced" age than women... when, in fact, men have always married later. Fatherhood is possible even for elderly men.

Oh, yeah! Women who would NEVER use "Mrs. HisName" (because that's so oppressive) end up changing their names legally to HerName-hyphen-HisName. They're still taking HisName!

Well, that's kinda the point. Those women who choose not to take their husband's name at all don't hyphenate. FWIW, one of the happiest couple I know, both married over 40, and she didn't take his name, but kept her maiden name instead. She just found out she was pregnant as a matter of fact, which makes one feel sorry for her doctor since she and her husband are both obstetricians.

When I was a young pup, I asked My mom for cash to driving lessons. She said why should she spring for driving lessons when I couldnt afford a car.
I guess that stuck because until I can afford to keep a family, I am not getting married.
