Teens mauled by grizzly in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A grizzly bear that was with her cub attacked several teens participating in a survival skills course in remote wilderness in Alaska, badly mauling two in the group, state troopers said Sunday.

The teens were among seven students participating in a 30-day backcountry course by the National Outdoor Leadership School when the attack occurred Saturday night in the Talkeetna Mountains north of Anchorage. They were rescued early Sunday.

The teens told troopers the attack occurred as they were lined up in front of each other for a river crossing. Those in the back of the line heard scream about the presence of a bear, with the two at the front of the line taking the brunt of the attack, trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said.

Another group of seven students and three instructors was waiting about six miles away for a helicopter hired by the Lander, Wyo.-based NOLS, said Bruce Palmer, a spokesman for the organization, which leads many such excursions in Alaska and elsewhere.

Probably should have taught them what to do when they encounter a mama grizzly and her cubs, Lesson 1.

“They had been trained to call bears, which they had done.”

“Over here, tasty tidbits.” Like that??? Too bad they didn’t teach them to sing that song that stupid guy, RIP, from Malibu was singing to them.

The ‘49ers would be rolling in their graves if they knew the kind of idiocy that takes place these days. They all carried guns, I’ll bet.

There should have been armed adults - they know meeting a bears with cubs is a possibility.

“They had been trained to call bears, which they had done.”

My new theory about bears is that no one knows what they might do.

They should probably be charge extra for the addition survival training they received courtesy of mama grizzly.

Survival training in Alaska without weapons = fail

Does the article say they didn’t have weapons?

I couldn’t find any mention of guns or even bear spray.

If they would show what grizzly and polar bears are really like, you wouldn’t have so many fools running around in the wilderness unarmed. The nature programs give the impression that these animals will not attack unless threatened. Not so, bears are the land version of an eating machine. They should show a polar bear ripping up an eating a seal or a grizzly bear gutting a deer with its claws.

>>Probably should have taught them what to do when they encounter a mama grizzly and her cubs, Lesson 1.<<

I feel badly for the hurt kids but how could that NOT be lesson #1? When I was in the Boy Scouts and went on my first overnight hike in the San Gabriel Mountains over LOS ANGELES, CA, they taught us about bears — especially to give cubs a wide berth and let a scoutmaster know if we see cubs, as well as to string food on a high line to keep bears away and other strategies I don’t remember since it was so long ago.

Why didn’t these kids in wilderness Alaska given similar instruction as city kids from L.A.?

I might be jumping to conclusions but the article seems pretty clear...

Here is the Wiki on National Outdoor Leadership School: NOLA

Definitely a leftie environmentalist operation that created the "leave no trace" philosophy.

I wonder if that includes "in bear scat".

It's certain they were unarmed.

Is the bear a Catholic Mason Shriner Conservative with a mainifesto? Is he acting from Timothy Trumble’s diary?
