One late evening back in 1966 another freshman buddy and I were stumblimg drunkenly down the sidewalk along the Red Cedar River on the Michigan State Campus making quite a ruckus, singing and hollering. Suddenly out of the shadows a monster appeared with a girl on his arms -— Bubba Smith.

“You fellas hold it down, you’re bothering my girl!”, said he.

Said I, well, nothing. I don’t think I let a peep escape my mouth the rest of the night.

Years ago I used to drive Limos in Dallas. I picked Mr. Smith up at DFW Airport one night and as we got to the car several people walked up for autographs. While he was signing and talking to people I put his luggage in the trunk. Two things happened at the same time, someone tried to open the car door and Mr. Smith decided to get something out of his suitcase. I only saw the guy reaching for the door and unfortunately for Mr. Smith I didn't see him stick his head in the trunk so in my hurry to stop the guy from opening the door I slammed down the trunk lid.

I'm not sure who of the two of us were more surprised but I do know which of the two of us saw spots for the next 10 minutes.

I was horrified that I had just hit my client in the head with the trunk lid but without missing a beat he smiled at me and and said, "damn, you Cowboy fans sure do hold a grudge!".

Johnny has died. As far as I know, Brooks has cancer. God, I wish I were young again. Life was simple back then.

Lots of NFL players (not Bubba Smith AFAIK) end up with ALS, and its believed the blows to the head are a major contributing factor.

He was also known to sit at Dagwoods on Thursday night and sip a beer or two. LOL

I know how you feel. I met both Johnny and Brooks - 2 of the nicest guys ever. They loved people and their fans, they came up the hard way and appreciated everything they had.

Gentlemen in every way, we probably will not see the likes of them again. So sad...

So right. I have an autograph ball for the 1966 World Series signed by Brooks. No money could buy it. When I die, I’ll probably donate it to the Baltimore Sports museum.
