Ok, I am out shopping for the perfect retreat to get away from the city and if required live out there without any resupply required.
What I have so far identified: 1. Plentiful Nearby Food Supplies 2. Lots of Land 3. Shelters - anything specific about the shelter other than insulation, wood heat, and wind power with back up generators? 4. Guns? 5. Ammo? 6. Tools? 7. Sanitation?
It is pretty good as far as egress, but this spot wouldn’t be one I would want to flee from.
The wind is almost constant, that is the reason for the wind power, but sometimes the wind will be in excess of 145mph, little worried that your typical cabin won’t be able to stand up to that.
Going to look at what the locals use though for protection.
Actually thinking about not putting any windows in the house and only screens that won’t break or require maintenance with insulated shutters.
Also it can double as a whiskey still which will come in handy for trade and/or a medical disinfectant (and of course whiskey to toast a good but simple life with)
I had thought about that, but it didn’t meet my criteria:
1. Close enough that can be reached without sea or air travel
2. No freezing temperatures
Having set up exactly what you seek to set up, I have herds of white tail around me (you should see the effort we go through to keep them out of our gardens!). There are plenty of edible critters to harvest in a shtf scenario...
However. Now really think about this, When the shtf becomes reality, no matter how far you are isolated from the hungry hordes (trust me, we are WAY off the grid) there are going to be huge crowds of hungry folk looking for meat. What's the estimate... 200 million guns in the private sector? No matter how far you are off the grid, those Dad's with hungry kids to feed, amongst others are going to end up in your A.O., what are we going to do... kill them all?
From what I've gleaned from all the materials available, it is estimated that Most of the herds and what not will be eliminated within two to three months, I've heard even less time from others.
Indeed, plan on supplementing your diet from what nature provides you, but think about what I'm trying to tell you. If you can afford to, splurge on as much canned meat as you possibly can, while you can FRiend!

It will have a still, but I don’t think I will have grain to spare for whiskey. Maybe there is some other form of liquor I can make locally.
At least before the event, the water is pure enough to drink without any processing if you don’t mind risking lysteria even though there is very little chance of it
Very little freezing in SE Alaska. You should WANT a place only accessible by air or water. Get a boat..

I can grab some canned meat, what I worry about is people will eat it before they really need it and it just becomes waste.
It is hard to control people in an isolated communitiy sometimes.
There will be plenty of wild food available near by and I am sure to have several months of food. But I am not going to be able to stock a 2 or 3 year supply of meat.
I am going to stock a 5 year supply of grains, but that is pretty much it for long term stores.
I thought the only place that didn’t have deep freeze in the winter in Alaska was on the islands off the coast.
I didn’t know there were places in SE Alaska that weren’t on the islands that didn’t freeze.
I can’t really setup anything that far away though, I need to transport stuff there.
That may be another level of retreat though.
1. hunkerdown at home
2. Move to Retreat 1
3. Take boat to Retreat 2
If I was to do this though, I would need a lot more extended family support and they are the typical non-preppers that won’t do anything until it is too late.
Maybe. But keep in mind, in an apocalyptic situation, routes like the roads and rail lines may become popular travel routes for the hordes. Humans are creatures of habit, so they will have an affinity for paved roads and rails and trails and when they camp out, they won’t want to get too far from them.
There was an interesting and alarming article recently about a massive bunker that a family is building in VA. They made their fortune as consultants to the intelligence agencies. The thing is a massive, impregnable fortress. Frightening that they are building it for themselves. I’ll see if I can find the link.
By the way, that is not mild.
If we get to 40% unemployment, we are in an apocalyptic situation. Don’t forget that governments require revenue from working people. No one will lend to us at that point and the government will be shut down. We’ll all be on our own at that point.
I was thinking major would be that world economy breaks down and countries go back to the old theory “You keep what you kill”

Velveeta Cheese, I am getting a 3 year supply of that. The meat though, I can’t control people.
The idea of hording meat would be to supplement or deal with the scenario that meat can’t be had. Even if that were to happen, the people would have ate the canned meat long ago.
Yes, it is just way too expensive to plan on people being lazy about foraging. These people better work for their meat or they don’t eat.

Not that I could build something this nice, I am curious.
The area that I am looking at has roads to it but it is very remote and some of the roads and bridges are easily destroyed. Very long and unimproved roads that aren’t much more than trails. If someone doesn’t go down them, they will be completely invisible within 3 months due to underbrush taking over.
It is somewhat close to town yet will be inaccessible if it needs to be.
If you found it, so will hundreds of others if SHTF.
IMO, 99.9% of people do not have the slightest concept for envisioning what they would face under really adverse SHTF conditions.
Again just IMO, but in a SHTF scenario, attempting to defend a piece of ground, dwelling and goods is a fool’s course of action. You merely become a stationary target where fire can be brought to bear from all points of the compass.
I *TOTALLY* agree. For me a town with a population of 5,000 - 10,000 is ideal. As I've been running an active preparedness group since Nov. 2008 I've given this a lot of thought.
