Women Gossip Five Hours a Day, Study Shows
Adelaide Now ^ | August 15, 2011

It will come as no surprise to their often less talkative male counterparts

The typical woman spends five hours a day more than a third of her waking hours chatting and gossiping, a study has revealed.

Whether at home or work women natter for about 298 minutes every day, it found.

Discussing other peoples problems, who is dating who and other peoples children form the basis of most of the chat.

Other subjects that come up most regularly include sex, shopping and the soap operas.

The report also found women spend 24 minutes a day discussing their weight, diets and dress size.

And one third of women say they spend a chunk of their day discussing what they are eating for lunch, while one quarter regularly exchange recipes.

The survey was commissioned to mark FirstCape Cafi Collections search to find Britains Queen of Chat.

Spokesman Steve Barton said: "Woman are renowned for their ability to chat and men are fascinated by what they find to talk about when they get together."

"It's interesting to see a list like this detailing exactly what topics women actually end up talking about that generate that level of buzz, energy and excitement.

"I never would have guessed food would have been such a hot topic. Im pleased to see complaining about their partners was at the bottom of their list, though.

"It is also interesting to see how the conversation differs between women talking to each other and women talking to their partners.

"And its really nice to see that most women are happy to have a quick chat with complete strangers.

Women also like to talk about what cosmetic surgery procedures they would like, what their mother-in-law has said, and which celebrities they fantasise about.

The study also found the average women spends 17 minutes nattering before they get to work.

Those with friendly neighbours spend nearly half hour a week having a gossip or a moan together.

Thirty eight per cent even confess to spending 12 minutes a week passing the time of day by talking with shop staff.

Most women prefer chatting to their friends to anyone else but say they talk to their partner, mum and their best friend about completely different things.

Husbands are most likely to get the brunt of work talk, with a daily update from on how their partner's day has gone and who has annoyed them while the more juicy gossip is reserved for a woman's best friend.

But 36 per cent of women say they cannot be trusted to keep a friend's secret and that they regularly tell their partner things they are told in confidence.

Most women prefer to chat face to face and also like to talk to friends one on one rather than in a big group.

Steve Barton added: "So much chatter is done with friends over food and a glass of wine. It is clearly very much a breaking bread occasion."

it’s the worst when my wife has some gossiping to do, and my ears are the only ones within range to unload on.

It cannot be right. I would bet I don’t spend five hours a MONTH. They must have surveyed a bunch of rich or poor stay-at-home types who have nothing to do and all day to do it. I do not know can cannot recall ever having known any women who would spend, “typically”, five hours a day gabbing.

Apparently, the writer of this piece needs to go back to writing class. Apostrophe and comma use would be a good place to start.

Just nuts. Half an hour a day talking about weight? Plastic surgery? Celebrity fantasies?

It’s reasonable that a normally sociable person would spend a half hour a week passing the time with neighbors. 4 minutes a day ... “Hey, I got a nasty-gram from the HOA about parking the car at the curb, and that was your car!” “Oops, sorry about that. I bought whole milk when I wanted skim; can you use it?” “Sure. Did you hear the Jones’s son got a full scholarship?” “Yeah, isn’t that great!?”

15 minutes being pleasant to store employees makes sense, too. What kind of service do rude people who stare blankly get?

Heh same here except I would limit mine to maybe 1 hr a week outside of family, if that.
Of course I work out of my house so don’t see much of other people, and I like it.

My FR time is socio-political activism, important gardening research, and a substitute for antidepressants or psychological therapy.

It depends on the week. Sometimes my mother-in-law calls. The homeschooling association gets together every month or so. My prayer group meets every other week.

This is not true — some of that five hours is spent telling each other how much they like the other woman’s hair, attire, nails, shoes, *not* the same thing as gossip.

After the church service, I waited in my car for my wife for her to leave the church building and to join me.

“Oh, I’m so sorry! Those guys just wouldn’t stop listening to me!” she’ll tell me.

This study is describing the men in my area to a T.
They talk all the time so much so that I faze them out. They talk about their weight, how they’re trying to lose it, they talk about food, how much they’re eating or not. What time they eat, what they drink... What they shouldn’t have eaten because of the effect it has on them the next morning. Then they go on describing the most recent ailment. They talk about their hair or lack thereof and how they’re trying to change it.

B O R I N G ! !

Men just love to hear themselves talk.

Was this study funded by taxpayers? This is like a study showing that water is wet.

We need to de-fund all studies. Interested corporations can do the R & D if they want to establish a fact.

I realize that, but anyone who has ever worked in an office with a bunch of women knows that there is quite a bit of hyper-analysis of all goings on every day.

And our latest conquests from the clearance racks. This is important stuff! In some universe, anyway, maybe not ours.
