OK, so we've had a lot of rain recently in Northern Virginia. Yesterday into today accounted for about 8 inches, with another four inches earlier in the week. There is a small stream down the road which flooded badly, bringing down some trees around the bridge. It's marginally passable if you were to take one car at a time. In any case, the bridge is closed. Fairfax County Police, in their infinite wisdom, chose to block entry to the road at the nearest intersection. What they didn't consider was that they were blocking access to several hundred homes as well.
When I came upon an officer at this intersection, I asked him what I should do because I lived there. His very rude reply was to yell "the road's closed." Thanks, asshole, I can see that, so I replied "Yes, but I live here and I'm returning home." He then yelled, rudely again, "Can't you see the road's closed? Go up the road." I asked him where, saying again that I lived there and you can't just block almost 400 homes off without telling the residents where to go. I suggested a sign that said "local traffic only" or "residents only" and his response was "too bad."
Seriously, why does it seem like the only people who like cops have never had an experience with them? Are they all this obnoxious? (In my experience, yes, but that's another story.)

I know how you are feeling.
The issue is that they are trained to act and speak in a way that is intimidating and “commanding.” They also have a feeling that you are a civilian, and you have to right to question their authority.
Its funny, in my suburban town, the cops that have had “real” experience in the military or the real world (read urban police department) are the best ones to deal with. They take it easy when being a jerk is not necessary. They are the best ones to be on hand when your relative is having a heart attack and they are the first responder.
That said, I think the best way to deal with these guys is to try to let them know you respect the fact that they are cops, and you just want to get home. Usually they will break the mold and be real people. If that doesn’t work, shake your head, whisper something about them being Aholes, and figure it out on your own.
Confrontation never, ever works with these guys.
You want to know what’s really sad? There is a true roadblock at the last intersection before the bridge. The bridge is within sight of that, so you know exactly why the road is blocked. There is ample turnaround space for any vehicle short of a semi, and I’ve never even seen a semi on that road.
The roadblock I was stuck at served absolutely no purpose besides preventing the people who live in the two developments along the way from getting home. It was really not hard to figure out.
I see this at work all the time. We have a mix of civilian police and military police controlling access to the base where I work. Guess which group causes all of the problems?
You are a liar. You didn’t politely ask anything. You demanded that you have access to a place because you thought you were entitled. By the way YOUR taxes don’t pay crap. Your contribution to a police salary is probably less than a cent. The police don’t work for any one particular person. They certainly don’t work for you, and your contribution to any salary is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. You see, in a republic the police work for the public at large, who speak through their elected representatives. Thus, if you don’t like a road being closed, you got to convince enough of your fellow citizens to elect representatives who will forbid the practice. You don’t get to change the rules on the fly because you think you are king.
Anyway, your response here is more than evident as to who the blame lays with.
You just wanted to be in charge, and now you are taking a fit like a petulent child because you didn’t get your way.

Screaming out a window and demanding entry past a police barrier is not the same as “needing to return to ones house.”

If you honestly believe what you wrote, then you are nothing more than a slave. The police are your masters, and you live at their beck and call. They control where you can go and when you can go there, and you have no property rights that aren’t directly controlled by the police.
Well, either that or you’re one of the cops with an insecurity complex.

Actually I’m kind of surprised the cop hasn’t shot your dog yet..... wait did you make it home? May want to check on the dog when you get there!
They only shoot dogs when they illegally break into the wrong house.
Fortunately, I don’t have a dog.
I did make it home, and I had to drive around another roadblock that “somebody” decided didn’t need to be there. That actually wasn’t me. If that roadblock was intended to be blocking the whole street (and it sure looked like it) then the only way I could get in (to my perfectly fine neighborhood roads) without driving through a roadblock would’ve been to drive on the wrong side of a divided road.
Sometimes a road is closed because it’s simply impassable. It’s your neighborhood, if you know other ways to get in try them.
Well, glad to hear you made it home, sorry to hear you don’t have a dog anymore....... but with LEO these days, nobody owns a dog for long :-)
Get the badge number and name of the officer. Then call the department and lodge a formal complaint both regarding HOW the road was closed - prohibiting locals from getting home - as well as the unprofessional attitude of the officer. Remind the department that you can contact the local TV station and other media to the lack of unprofessional behavior as well if you are not favorably received.

Do not do this. Never get the local or county mountie mad at you. Life will be hell. Instead, save this for when you really need it. No sense of gaining harassment for something so small.
Flintsilver, try to just ignore him. He thinks he was in the shrubs, watching the situation and he’s trying to make this all your fault. He’s also got the WRONG username, considering his attitude.
I mentioned that to a state trooper. He said "Do you fish?"
