AUBURN A state trooper and two environmental police officers took some time out yesterday morning for the birds.
State and environmental police rescued a barred owl about 11 a.m. yesterday morning that was injured and struggling in the breakdown lane near Exit 10 eastbound on the Massachusetts Turnpike.
State Trooper Michael J. Golenski from the Charlton State Police Barracks said he parked his cruiser in front of the owl and stood watch until Officer Jason DeJackome and Sgt. Scott Amati with the Massachusetts Environmental Police arrived.
It was in the breakdown lane and it was injured, said Trooper Golenski. I kept traffic away from it. It tried standing up, but its left wing was broken.
Pretty little guy. I love owls.
He really is beautiful! Poor little thing!
They are beyond *cool*.
This will be the one time I exempt a MA trooper from ridicule. He done good.
Amazing feather design that allows for soundless flight.
Pretty bird! I’m glad they were able to help it!
I like owls, too. And this one was smart enough to go to the “breakdown” lane. :)
An absolutely beautiful bird. I just love owls.
I once saw a huge barnowl sitting on a mailbox. I couldn’t believe how big it was, and when it flew away the wingspan was awesome.
I know it is anthropomorphizing, but I find it hard to look into a raptors eyes and not see a spark of intelligence. They, unlike many birds, seem to tolerate human touch when they are injured. How do they know?
?Massachusetts Environmental Police?” WTF? I shudder to think of what might be within their jurisdiction,
I was thinking the same thing. I wonder what their SWAT team looks like and who they are used against? I also wonder if Romney was involved in its creation or not?
They’re better known as “Trout Troopers”
They often direct traffic. And they are great for defending coyotes that terrorize residential neighborhoods. They’ll threaten to arrest anyone who interferes with them.
Beyond that, I don’t know what more they do than cash their paychecks.
They go to their academy and someone removes their sense of humor, fun, and common sense,
On the upside they are able to work traffic details for $50 an hour.
Mass cops suck.
And, this damn owl screwed up traffic. Nice story and all...but I see four or five dead owls a week on the Pike.
I love all raptors. Oddly enough, I think I've only heard an owl once here in S.E. Michigan but on my pheasant hunting trips to N.W. Kansas, I heard them every night and actually saw several during the daytime..........
What is strange, is there are owls on Hawaii. How did they get here? See them at dusk fairly often. Big guys too.
