PDF?? Adobe?? Updates? Huh???

Posted on 10/24/2011 12:09:54 PM PDT by djf

Anybody else getting Adobe PDF reader update notifications just about every day or so lately?

It's getting kind of tiresome. Can't they bunch them up and release them every two weeks or so?

Can that entire feature be turned off? I'd rather NO SOFTWARE was able to do auto-updates...

So just reject it and set it to not do automatic updates. The one I found that was most important was not even documented. Firefox has been locking up lately...the cure was to update Adobe Flash to the Version 11. Problem solved.

Apparently those updates aren’t actually able to update or something.

Not only that but you have to go to the Adobe website to set your settings on Flash but they don’t tell you that. I learned about it from another FReeper. And the update reminders keep coming even though you have the latest version.

There is a very good reason they are coming out.

You see, Adobe is a security nightmare. Adobe is patching security holes, and these various holes leave your machine open to some nasty security violations.

This is why Steve Jobs came right out and said that the iPhone, iPad and iPods would NOT (ever) support Adobe Flash. It appears that a vast majority of issues Apple has had with virus, trojans and other nastiness has been through exploits in Adobe.

So, Adobe is busy patching the mess; and there are a lot of holes to patch.

Why don’t you just update the Adobe Reader?

I am assuming that you are not updating.

Like another already suggested, go in preferences section of each program you do not want to automatically update and turn it off.

And the usual question that people post as a funny here “Are you logged in?”.

These are mostly security updates. They are coming out constantly because they are finding more security holes as fast as they can fix them.

Whatever you do, don't ignore them.

I think it’s a Chinese virus that plants malicious software in everybody’s computer so that one fine day when they think Obama is not sincere enough in his apologies they can bring our entire network and all our computers into a complete meltdown.

Others already said so, but let me repeat. You need only one update - and that is to remove Acrobat Reader from your computer. It is a huge, slow, bug-infested mess.

Instead you download the free Foxit Reader. It's much, much faster than Acrobat Reader. Make sure you DON'T allow PDF documents to be opened in your browser (there will be two settings for that, IIRC.)

Could you elaborate please? I’ve pulled up foxit reader and there is also a PDF editor foxit program available. I don’t want to delete all Adobe files if this isn’t going to work. In all due respect, I need your advise. Thanks.

Exactly, and Java is the same way. You should be putting on every Adobe and Java update that comes out ASAP. Not doing this leaves your system far too vulnerable.

Either that, or uninstall them both and don’t view PDF files or run Java apps. (Totally unrealistic in today’s world, so just do your updates!)

Just checked the website... it says it needs XP SP2 or above... I’m running W2K SP4 on my laptop, so it might not work...

as soon as I hit “POST” somebody will probably get all snarky about W2K...

Doesn’t seem to be compatible with W2K, missing DLL file. If I get ambitious, I might copy it over from one of my XP machines...

I don’t want to delete all Adobe files if this isn’t going to work.

You don't have to uninstall Adobe products. You can install Foxit products alongside. You will then have more options on what to open PDF files with. I have one copy of Acrobat Professional, so I can't delete that - but I have Foxit Reader on the same computer to read PDF files. As a reader it is so much better than the Acrobat Reader!

there is also a PDF editor foxit program available

Yes, but these compete with Adobe Acrobat (a fairly expensive piece of software.) These aren't free. You don't need them unless you need to edit PDFs.

Foxit Reader shows ads in a corner by default, but you can disable that in the menu (View - Advertisement.)
