Elderly should waltz three times a week to prevent falls

Elderly people should waltz around the living room three times a week to reduce their risk of falls, research suggests.

Pensioners can also improve their balance by carrying a bag when they walk to the shops, say scientists.

But walking and cycling, although good for overall health, are no good at reducing the number of falls.

Do people still waltz? This seems like an odd recommendation. :)

Working out with light weights might be good.

I’d rather fall.

I got a laundry bag that is like a shopping bag so I can hold onto the railing.

But most of my falls are just caused by not watching what the hell I'm doing.

Apparently, there are "walking" classes available because after I went to the doc for a hurt back (lifting 50 lbs of books), I got a notice for "no fall" school.

This is your medicare dollars at work. Same cr** with Silver Sneakers. All money making benefits.

If I waltz three times a day....lock me up...I'm sick.

My wife talked me into taking square-dancing lessons two years ago ...

...I've lost over 50 pounds and six inches off my waistline, my knee pain has decreased and I'm able to walk long distances like I used to, and lowered my blood pressure to the level of your average carrot.

We go square-dancing at least twice a week, and quite often more than that, and she's just now convinced me to go to water aerobics in the evening with her. I'm hoping to lose another 20 pounds or so.

Besides, there is the added benefit of being able to grab ahold of some very attractive older ladies without my wife becoming upset about it ...

The problem with old people is that they get too sedentary and lose their leg muscle strength

If you want good balance, build up your legs muscles

this loweres your center of gravity and make you less likely to fall

When you lose muscle mass in your legs you get top heavy and wobble easily

Well, you know the old saying, “Waltz for balance...Polka for profit.”

I’m not the one searching out specific FReepers and posting on their 10-day old threads on a Friday night.
