Buckeye Police "Body-Planted" Grandpa at WalMart in Black Friday Mayhem
Phoenix News Times ^ | November 25, 2011 | Ray Stern

The Buckeye incident is catching national attention this morning.

According to news reports, a crowd of fired-up shoppers at the Walmart were clawing at a box of videos games when a little boy was "trampled" and cut his lip. The boy's grandfather then tried to lift the kid, first sticking a video game he was holding in his waistband. The guy reportedly had $600 worth of other merchandise with him he intended to buy -- not exactly the shoplifter type.

One witness of the incident quoted by Channel 10 news (KSAZ-TV) seems to indicate that police wildly over-reacted:

"You would have thought there was a cure for cancer in this box," said shopper Skyler Stone. "I mean people were literally going insane.

"They grabbed the guy, body planted him into the ground -- face shatters on concrete. That's a hard concrete floor inside Walmart.

"All of a sudden, you see this little boy run up and wailing and yelling, 'Grandpa, Grandpa,' and crying his eyes out," Stone said.

If it can wait, you can probably find better (and cheaper) stuff at MonoPrice. I don't work for them or anything, but I do buy every cable I can from there.

If Grandpa lost his retirement in the market crash, methinks he just got it back, and then some.

“There is no situation so bad it cannot be made worse by the presence of a policeman”

Word.

That “Police officer” was never a police officer.

Anyone who would do that is a thug.

I’d be fine with ten years. I bet if they review his records, theree wil lbe lots of previous complaints - just not enough witnesses and cameras.

It’s possible that a hit to the floor with his face that hard is going to require reconstructive surgery. He was rendered unconscious and might possibly suffer some brain damage not including the coma he could be in at the moment.

I’m surprised they didn’t tase him and his grandson.

“Not sure what kinda coax you need but home depot has it and its usually a heck of a lot cheaper and you don’t have to deal with those freaks at radio shack FYI i still use the Shack for some stuff”

Less and less for me, because they cater less to the wires and pliers people (who build Radio Shack and they now disdain) and cater instead to underclass mobile phone customers.

Man. They knock the guy out, then start moving him around not knowing if they have caused other injuries. Your are right. He’s Buckeyes next Millionaire.

I don’t get it. There is not one thing I want that bad to go out a get in a melee like this.

Good grief.

Most states see it if you haven’t left the store with an item, it is conversion. That is why they usually wait until a perp walks out the door.

More details here:

http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/valleyfever/2011/11/buckeye_grandpa_was_shopliftin.php

Jerald Allen Newman was the arrested man.

The police said:

Yet Newman wouldn’t have ended up on the ground if only he had handled his arrest differently, says Buckeye Assistant Police Chief Larry Hall.

“He’s responsible,” Hall says.

Hall does admit the department made a mistake — by not getting its side of the story out early enough.

Jerald Newman’s injuries are visible in his jail mug shot.
“We’re taking heat,” he says.

From my previous link:

The teen also said he saw Newman tuck a video game under his shirt.

So did a Walmart security guard who nabbed Newman and walked him over to a police officer.

Hall says none of the officers’ names are being released yet, pending the investigation.

As Hall tells it, the Buckeye cop lifted up Newman’s shirt and “sure enough, the game is in his waistband.”

Under Arizona law, concealment can be used as a basis for arrest — officers aren’t required to wait for a suspect to leave the store, Hall explains.

After reading the story in this morning's newspaper and birdcage liner, I am starting to think that maybe I and some others, did what I have railed against most my life. Prejudging without enough information.
Maybe we should wait until after a complete review by both the police dept and the DA’s office before we jump in with both foots.
