Courtesy is dead.. Run in with 20 something in parking lot

It's been building.. No one opens doors for anyone any more, thank yous are few and far between. But today.. I am just blown away.

I am sitting in my van, enjoying some white castle while reading FR.

I hear a loud BANG on the side of my van. Look over and out the passenger window to see a 20 something kid who looks like he is a LONG way away from the beach. We lock eyes. He had banged his door in to the side of my van.. So I wait for him to walk around to the drivers side of my van.

and wait..

I look in my rear view mirror. He's headed for the door to the restaurant.

I open my door, and ask "hey, aren't you going to at least say sorry?!?!?"

"it's just a little paint man, my car is ok!"

(WTF!!)

It's a old work van, one more door ding is not going to kill me or it. However, his statement just floored me!

And yes, his stuffed Honda Civic had a Zero bumper sticker on it. Both 08 and 12.

In the spring in my state, when the snows recede and dairy farmers finally get to empty their winter manure pits, the roads can get a bit messy. One of my college pals hired his younger brother to drive the spreader in the islands - a normally busy route for NYers to get to Burlington. One particularly obnoxious gent in a flashy convertible got a bit too impatient traveling at only 25 mph for the three miles from farm to field and received a present he’ll never forget. A quick flick of the wrist engaged the PTO and sent a few hundred gallons of ripe Holstein manure in a gentle arc that turned the car from red to brown, front to back. Naturally, the car owner called the police, but the young operator claimed he got nervous and hit the wrong switch.
Case closed as an accident.

Be calm, as the other guy owns the problem. Harry Truman put it this way: “He is the reason that there are more horses asses than horses.”

BTW, I’ve been told that the first hundred years are the toughest.

Sir Francis Bacon once stated ......

“In taking revenge, a man is but even with his enemy; but in passing it over, he is superior.

That said I don’t think that 20 year old punk read any of Bacons quotes so ya should have repeatedly slammed yer car door back and forth into his Honda a few times and said ....yeah yer right , my doors OK and left !

That’s just my opinion of course....yer mileage may vary.

Stay safe !

Most of these fast food joints have surveillance cameras watching the parking lots. It’s worth a try to report it to the police and see if they can review the tapes and maybe catch a license number. As far as I know, they still treat hit and runs pretty seriously - even if it’s only a minor accident.

What rock have you been under for the past 20 years?

I have lived in California my entire life, sometimes in San Franciso and Sometimes in and around Sacramento. Manners and courtesy died some 20 years back.

It has been a decade or 2 since anyone has ever waved at me in a car when I allowed him to merge into my lane or come in from a parking lot to a crowded street.

Courtesy and manners died a good 20 years ago and it has gotten worse since then.

Pop culture has made it worse, or perhaps art is just imitating life. 40 years ago we would NEVER have tolerated commercials with abrasive people bullying others. Today it is encouraged and it is the role model who is telling people off to be left alone to eat a burger, or pushing people aside to grab the last product from a shelf.

And the flood of immigrants has only made it worse. Some cultures from over-crowded conditions embrace might makes right. In these countries, there is no waiting in line for your turn. They method is just to shove to the front, pushing others aside. Now that those immigrants are here, they have brought with them their “shove you aside, push to the front” mentality.

We are a long way from Ward Cleaver, sharing, holding doors open, saying “you first” or granting a courtesy wave.

Today it is all about “you dissing me”, “F you”, the middle finger, what can I get by force, up yours, eat my dust, get outta my way.

As we become a less Christian nation, the Golden Rule is dying. I just can’t believe you haven’t seen it until 2012. Manners and courtesy died a good 20 years ago or more.

Very sad to see a conservative who has no respect for constitutionally protected free speech. Obama supporters may be idiots, but they have every right to adorn their car expressing that fact. You have no right to damage another person’s private property.

Very sad.

The more congested the area, the more self-centered people will be. They are stressed out and act that way. People living in low density rural areas tend to be a lot less stressed out and a bit slower living. Manners and courtesy get lost easier among stressed out inner city dwellers. That is true.

The greater point is that too many parents haven’t taught their children manners like sharing, waiting their turn, and politeness. All of my friends do, but there are many parents who don’t, and that has been going on a good couple of decades.

It is really sad as good manners and politeness and civility are fundamental to good society and living by the golden rule. It is one of those cultural aspects that separated the USA and most other Western nations from the Turd World backwaters.

Oh well. It was nice while it lasted and I’m grateful I lived through it for a while. Future children will live a lifetime without being exposed to courtesy and politeness.

Just sad.

Beyond that, all the vigilantism advocated by posters here is really shocking as well. Living by the golden rule takes away your ability for an “eye for an eye” retaliation. It may be satisfying temporarily, but it is NOT right.

I was taught “two wrongs don’t make a right”. In the context of all I said above, I don’t even hear saying like that any more. I grew up with a lot of good saying children aren’t taught anymore.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Forgive and forget.
Pride comes before a fall.
Virtue is its own reward.
God helps those who help themselves.
What profits a man if he gains the world but loses his soul.

These punks are everywhere and are a perpetual vexation. The response of the idiot spoke of his self-serving path in life: a habitual lack of consideration for and downright hostility toward his fellow man.

Best I can do to keep these things in perspective is to feel extremely sorry for these jerks. The path they choose to carve for themselves forms deeper and deeper ruts, until the grooves become darned near impossible to escape out of.

The path leads to destruction - one thoughtless act of arrogance at a time. Sucks to be them.

I sure hope you got a police report anyway! Most insurance companies tell you to report an accident just in case.

No violation of Constitutional rights occurred whatsoever.

Exactly. The kids were on private property. The store owner(s) can exercise whatever security measures they like. If the kids don't like being asked to open their backpacks, they ought not bring them into the store....or shop elsewhere.

The Constitution limits the powers of Government. Not property owners.

Sadly I was in a white castle induced nirvana and was just to happy to ruin the guys day (or more importantly waste the cops time) to file a report or get a plate number.

I will rest well knowing that some day Karma will get him, or he’ll have to answer to his deed at the gates of heaven.

Jerks will be jerks.

I feel sorry for them. At some point something is going to yank them out of their little self centered world and into reality. It will not be a pleasant experience for them.

I mean think about it, do you think there is any one in the world that actually likes that guy? His family may love him, he may have friends who hang around for what they can get out of him but like him? Probably not.
