I think the article is saying this hormone can change the metabolism to increase or decrease fat to an unhealthy level and both scenarios can lead to dementia.I didn't go to Yahoo News. I find it takes to long to download. This link goes to the actual citation, which is a FReebie. I only read a little beyond the abstract's conclusion. All it says is that there's a weird correlation between increased adiponectin levels and all cause dementia in women, an unexpected result, especially in type 2 diabetics, IMHO.

Insulin resistance increases risk of dementia, and of weight gain also. (IOW “Type II diabetes” causes both +/-)
