An outbreak of A(H1N1) swine flu claimed the lives of two people -- 19 and 21 years old -- in Mexico's capital in the first weeks of the year, health authorities said Saturday. The health secretary of Mexico's Federal District, Armando Ahued, said there were 138 confirmed cases of the flu, including 110 cases of A(H1N1), a novel strain of the swine flu that was first detected in 2009.
Nationwide, 333 cases of the virus have been confirmed, the federal government's health secretary said earlier in the week, without saying how many deaths had been attributed to it.
The latest victims were a 19-year-old and a 21-year-old who died in separate hospitals.
The first outbreak of the A(H1N1) virus occurred in April, 2009 in Mexico and the United States, and quickly became a global pandemic that claimed the lives of 17,000 people. In Mexico alone, more than 1,250 people died.
The World Health Organization declared the pandemic over in 2010 as the flu returned to typical seasonal patterns.

me too. started two weeks or so ago in my head but has migrated to my chest which elimnates exercising and that makes me cranky. no fever or big body aches so it isn’t the flu. may see the doc this week.
not all negative. no work right now so i take it easy, stay in bed and listen to classical music and read a book a day, build models, and have lost all the holiday weight gain.

Never a good sign when the flu kills young adults- it indicates death from the immune response, a cytokine storm.

I’m not nagging you, BW, but just keep an eye on it. Both daughters got something similar. It migrated to the five year olds chest and she went on antibiotics. It went from a cough to something a bit more serious within 48 hours. Hope you feel better and very soon.

No, not at all, it’s not an allergy response. The immune response involved is the body unleashing antibodies to attack the flu virus.
A virus like the swine flu or the bird flu, that has both human and animal elements, seems capable of provoking an out of control immune response in young people with a strong immune system.
The flu is a respiratory disease and a cytokine storm in the lungs can drown the victim. In 1918 young adults were often healthy in the morning and dead by nightfall. It’s something that hasn’t been seen since and it’s why the public health community seems to overreact when swine flu or avian flu are a possibility. It won’t be an overreaction if we get a repeat of 1918.
Well I hope you feel better soon. I’m starting to get over it but Lord Almighty I never was so sick in my life. May I suggest Mendelsohn? I think it would be very soothing.
