What ashes? The article doesn’t mention she received any ashes. She only put down money for a cremation.

Well, excuuuuuuuse me! I assumed one always receives ashes after paying for a cremation. I've never been offered a no-ashes cremation fee.

Interesting. Something similar happened to my neighbor’s family. Their dog was diagnosed with cancer. With great sorrow they took him to be euthanized.
A couple of weeks later they get a call from the pound. “You will be happy to know we have your dog.” The dog had an implanted identity chip.
Sure enough it was their dog. Someone at the vet’s office had taken the dog and given it to a friend. The friend decided after a few days she didn’t want the dog and took it to the pound.
I wonder how common this is?

I’ve stayed for the ones I’ve had to have euthanized (last 2 have died on their own and I”m thankful for that). But I have had mine cremated. I know it may or may not be their ashes I’ve gotten back, but we have not lived in the same place all alone, and so I didn’t really want to bury them somewhere and then leave them either. So, I have carried these little boxes of ashes around. I really have no idea what I’ll ultimately do with them. I have an Aunt who has a pet cemetery. I think I might put them there, or maybe we will scatter them wherever we retire. Not sure. For now, they reside with me. I guess it’s weird, but it’s mostly for lack of any other idea what else to do with them. They sure are heavy.

I’ll break the law and bury them in my back yard like we did as kids.

Me, too, but is a little backyard burial illegal?

I’d have that vet’s head on a stick *and* my dog back.

And I'm sure you would be willing to pay the $1,800 to reimburse the rescue agency for the monies spent to rehab your dog..........

I have 3 of those little boxes myself along with their little paw print in a plaster cast. The vet's office did that, I believe.

I do feel that their spirit, their essence, is not in those boxes but I can't make myself do anything with them.

Thanks for helping point out “the rest of the story”. The dog was mauled by ANOTHER of the owner’s dogs. She has NO basis to complain about somebody taking pity on poor Lola and getting her to a good home. It’s absolutely crazy that somebody got fired for this woman’s callousness.

It’s not “tacky” it’s illegal to charge for a service and not provide it.

That vet would be in serious trouble.

It’s terribly unethical. But I will say, when I worked for a vet, I held other people’s dogs and comforted them while they were put to sleep. Lots of people can’t bring themselves to do it. I never thought of THIS as a reason to do stay with your dog til the end (there are better reasons in my mind). But now, I add this to the list.

I bet it did. That’s the sweetest, saddest, most poignant thing I’ve read in a long time. Aren’t they amazing sometimes?

All I have to say is a child’s prayer was answered.

Good point.

The power of prayer should not be underestimated.

Thank-you for the good work you did with animals. I am one of those cowards who couldn’t stay while my beloved kitty was put to sleep. I have worked with sick and dying humans but somehow I lose it when it comes to animals.

The few times I’ve had to have a pet put down, I was always in the room with them until the very end.

6 years ago, this coming summer... we had to put TWO dogs down.

I stayed with both, to the end. It never occurred to me to just leave them there to die alone....

Tough year, I’ve gotta tell you...

I’d be mighty upset with the vet, too, if I was this lady.
