Aviva Sacks More Than 1,300 Workers by Mistake
The Telegraph ^ | 20 Apr 2012 | Anna White

The latest board shake-up at Aviva is radical, but not as radical as sacking its entire workforce by email.

More than 1,300 workers at Aviva Investors, the insurer's asset management arm, were shocked on Friday to receive an exit email from the HR department.

There was a stunned silence at the London headquarters as staff across the division read the unsympathetic memo - intended for just one employee.

It instructed all Aviva Investor workers to hand over company property and security passes on their way out of the building, and submit all electronic passwords. The terse communication reminded staff not to spill any company secrets.

It read: "I am required to remind you of your contractual obligations to the company you are leaving. You have an obligation to retain any confidential information pertaining to Aviva Investors operations, systems and clients."

Noticed most of the comments took the opportunity to attack HR folks.

What you need to do is farm all your HR "benefits' program stuff to companies that specialize in that. Farm out your law work to a firm specializing in your broad area (sales, marketing, manufacturing, packaging, transportation, chemicals, etc).

Farm out your personnel data management to yet another firm specializing in that sort of thing, and finally hire your own accountant ~ keep him in a cage ~ feed him raw hamburger from time to time and make sure he knows how to do the budget.

You get to do all the hiring and firing. Your accountant will tell you when you need to do that.

Who should we blame if not HR?

Perhaps the mailman?

A friend worked for Answer City (circuit city’s help desk) many years ago. Showed up for work one mornin and there were two armed guards outside in front of the door with a person from hr. they were set up at a folding table. She handed out their last check and told them their personal items would be mailed to them. The building was locked up and dark...
