The Car is a good example of how restraint in the horror genre can work. It honors the tradition of real suspense movies by hinting at more than it shows, and inferring more than it explains. From the cryptic opening quote by Anton Le Vey to the ending in which the two main characters disagree on whether this is really the end, this "demon car" film keeps asking more questions than it answers. For some, this will bring frustration, for others, it makes the movie that much more fascinating. The "body count" is a total of 10 people, with no explicit scenes. And there are no "anonymous" killings. Each victim is named and acknowledged as a real human being and a loss. This is a refreshing departure from gore-fests. I'd rate it a 7 1/2.

I dialed it up on Netflix tonight just for fun. It is a lot more fun in color. Last time I saw it was on my moms Black and White in the bedroom 30+ years ago.

Everytime I know he movie is on, I watch it. Another car movie of a somewhat supernatural nature is the 1986 Charlie Sheen movie, "The Wraith." IIRC, it was about a bunch of punk bullies who went after this one kid plus they would force people to race against them and if they lose, the loser gave up their car to them. One girl in the film was in an abusive relationship with one off the punks after the punks killed the older brother, Jamie, of the kid, Billy, who wanted to date her. A mysterious driver shows up and drove a powerful car where he takes on the punks where they die off one by one when the mysterious driver challenged them with the exception of the nerdy punk, which was not involved in the murder and turned good. The car was a Chrysler concept car and if you look hard enough, you can see the Chrysler star emblem.
Charlie Sheen shows up and befriends Billy and is later revealed to by the mysterious driver and the ghost of Jamie who came back to avenge his death and help his kid brother.

I watched this recently on Netflix. Another great movie of the hell-on-wheels genre is The Duel with Dennis Weaver.

I still remember this great movie the first time I saw it when I was a kid.
Christine is my favorite evil car movie though. This one is second.

I was 14 and we saw it at the drive in.
I was scared to death the whole way home.
It didn’t help much that my dad kept taking us on vacation to backwater weird places where everybody acted like the locals in the movie.
I got my mom and my aunt so worked up whilst camped in a seemingly deserted campground overlooking Pilot Mountain during a full moon rising that they insisted the guys pack up the trailers and find someplace else with “lights and civilization”.

Almost anything with a 70’s Peter Fonda in it qualifies as schlock, to me.

His only saving grace was Easy Rider and Hopper stole the show, anyway.
The upside is that sometimes you’ll find the infinitely insane Bruce Dern co-starring...;D
