Good Riddance. (Vanity)

About 17 years ago, in Rochester, NY, I befriended a small group of people. It was in my druggie days, and they were all big potheads. There was one couple in particular, the T's, I will call them.

I used to go to their frequent dinner parties, and all of us would have a grand old time. They loved inviting me, they called me the 'life of the party'.

Fast forward to now. I happen to look them up on FaceBook. We are all delighted to have reconnected. Things are cool. Over the course of time, the female starts bringing up politics, decrying those 'awful, racist TEABAGGERS'. I tell her my sympathies are with the Tea Party and all we want is a return to the Constitution. When she starts going on about how the Constitution was written by a bunch of racist, evil white men and that it needs to be completely rewritten, I advise her that we probably should avoid the politics discussions if we are going to remain friends.

She ends up being a founding member of Lincoln, Nebraska's Occupy Movement. She contacts me about it and wants me to celebrate it with her. I tell her that I am very happy she's found something that works in her life to avoid depression and her other issues, but I am opposed to the movement as a whole. Still, I stress, I'm happy that she's happy.

Over the course of time, I do my usual thing on facebook and post occasional taunts and jokes directed at the Occupy Wall Street movement. Then one day I notice that she's been missing in action. I go look her and her husband up.

They de-friended me.

Well, to that, I say, good freakin' riddence. I like to leave politics out of friendships, but you know what? OWS and the left are my ENEMIES. I cannot be friends with my absolute, mortal, hated enemy.

Would you have unfriended him if he had not unfriended you?

And miss all the fun? No way!

A sister in law has a sister who has a couple of sons. That crowd are all jehovah's Witnesses ~ and far Leftwingtards.

You can't mention religion or politics around any of them without them running off into a rant. God forbid you get into Biblical exegesis.

One day on the Great Interconnecting Family Groupathon AP on G3 one of the sons forgot he was communicating with his aunt and began belittling her.

Must remember to hit next JH missionary with broom and chase her away quickly.

I just “unfriended” a bunch of my liberal friends. I don’t care to hear their opinion. It’s wrong and off base. You can spout off all you want. It’s a free country. But I don’t have to listen to you.

I retired after 40+ years w/ the same company (which was bought and sold by larger corporations three times). A group of us get together for breakfast and to chew the fat about once a month, we call ourselves the OPC (old pharts club). The group varies in size as some take extended vacations (winter can be a bitch in Wisconsin) and we have a core group of about six who never fail to be there.

Over the years we somehow picked up a guy we all had worked with with minimal friction and in general was considered a likable guy. As it turned out the guy was a flaming liberal and a verbal bully. It was getting so that some of the more introverted members would skip a breakfast if they knew that 'E' was going to be there.

The group was originally founded by myself and my chief draftsman 'P'. He does all the organizing and issues the cattle call via e-mail. We talked it over and decided the best thing to do was to drop 'E' from the e-mail list. Now breakfast goes down without the need for an antacid and it is safe to talk politics at the table w/o 'E' bloveating.

Some people are more like a stone in your shoe and you can do without the constant irritation.

Regards,
GtG

A lot of us have had similar experiences over the years. And it has certainly gotten worse as we've become increasingly polarized as a nation.

For us, conservative philosophy is an enthusiasm. For liberals, theirs is a faith. And so, where we tend to respond to their criticisms with (logical) attempts at argumentation, they respond to ours with searing anger because we are mocking their God.

Yeah, I hate that too, My Own Grandmother who survived Poverty and Possible Death During the Second World War, came to America in the 1990's in just enough time to Vote for B.J. Clinton Twice!

She Absolutely despises Guns, Free Markets, Thinks George BOOSH was Beelzebub, and just can't get enough of Ubama's programs.

I tell her that a Ubama policies leads to the Same Place that she grew up starving and fleeing in Germany in the 1940's. But is thick as brick when it comes to that.

A Rich, 78 Year Old, Jewish Land Renter isn't high on Ubama's list of people to please.

That wench has to have been whacked with whatever is dumber than a fence post and is in serious need of being whacked with a Clue by Four to bring back to reality.

She’ll still be a Looser Loser and unworthy of a hit from the Laz.

This is why FR is so valuable....it gives me a chance to vent off steam in a way I cannot do with the people around me.

On FB, I keep things lite, generally just commenting on sports and stuff like that.....it’s just not the right place for politics.

Facebook is a wasteland. I NEVER post anything personal: I post ONLY political stuff. I could give two hoots if anyone “defriends” me because of my beliefs. They weren’t real friends to begin with, and quite frankly, I’ve grown to the point in my life where I neither have to nor will in fact tolerate fools, so I say good riddance. Life is way too short to surround oneself with fools when there’s plenty of other great people around who are worth associating with.

I have only a very few friends left from former lifetimes who I’m willing to tolerate enough to still occasionally associate with. I never discuss politics with them and if they try to after warning them not to, I simply do an about-face and leave the room without saying a word. It’s surprising how effective such a tactic is. After about the third time, it never happens again.

In the mean time, I continue to develop new friendships; people who I have much in common with, people who are intelligent, thoughtful, objective, and who are in continuously-learning mode. People who can have rational discussions about a myriad of subjects. People who have something to offer me and to whom I have something to offer in return.

I tend not to form close relationships with leftards; it just isn’t that fun to hang around with people who make a political issue of everything.

But there was someone I added on FB for gaming purposes. She put up something about Earth Hour and as a joke (well, somewhat) I commented: “Know another good way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions? Stop breathing.”

She responded with a nastygram via private message and unfriended me.

Don’t let the door hit ya where the Good Lord split ya, and furthermore, it ain’t MY problem that you can’t take a joke.

I am so sick of that stoopit term “social justice” or any other lame azz “Justice”.

I usually tell my friends justice can be had in the courts or at the end of a gun. One keeps order the other keeps the peace.

They hate that and then always, always, always follow that with my lack of respect and compassion.

Get a dog if you want respect, see a nurse if you want compassion, the valet will provide you validation and get a life.

Nice post, Laz. I have always believed that someone's party affiliation doesn't say a lot about what is in that person's heart. There are kind, generous, loving people of all persuasions.

Still, there are a lot of folks we have to deal with from time to time whose political ideology has so totally permeated their lives they are incapable of normal relations.

I always tell people that they left the "ist" off at the end of "social."

I am the lone Republican (well, Conservative) in a family of Democrats. My father being the ARCH Liberal (a one percenter too at one time, still liberal back then, you know the type). He is getting up there in age, and it is difficult to visit family these days because politics is ALWAYS discussed. I manage to stay out of the fray, unless someone says something completely off the wall. Usually I'll make a quip that ridicules that persons position, and thats it.

To be honest, I know several more members of my large immediate family are more conservative than my father, much more really. Truth is, they would probably consider themselves moderate Republicans, but there is this visceral hate for Republicans that keeps them from admitting it.

Its just kinda tough maintaining relationships when you differ so much on politics, and when one or more parties is unable to tone down the rhetoric. It it wasn't family, I wouldn't bother dealing with it.

My condolences, but on the other hand, good riddance.
