The wider population of Dunedin have long tolerated the bibulous habits of the many students in the city. But that patience is being strained by the emergence of a bizarre new branch of drinking game, according to reports from the southern New Zealand city.

I’ve heard that one nickname for moonshine in the past was “San Juan possum juice”. The possum part of this did not come from a game however but from the fact that possums, drawn by the odor, sometimes fell into mash containers out in the woods and drowned.

All I need to hear is ‘drink’, ‘tree’, ‘fall’ and I’m in, we’ll adapt the rules for Central Texas as we see fit, hold mah beer while I assemble a committee.

Now somebody’s got to bring the javelinas to make it interesting.... and that would be JPSB.

We played a version of this in college called “Pigeon”. The players would sit on the ledge of the 20th floor and drink until they fell. We tried to catch them in a net. It was a net that came fron a 10 gallon aquarium, but, hey, at least we tried. Some of them whistled like the old Stuka divebombers.

I know the grackles and mocking birds get drunk eating the Nandina berries that are fermented. They fly into windows on a regular basis later in the year.

You have to find a live oak - their branches spread out and are great for climbing ... most other Florida trees just go straight up. As long as we're on the subject of drinking I also recommend a power boat over a sail boat - you're just bound to spill your drink coming about at some point under sail - why ruin the sunset? ;-)

Maori’s inhabit several countries in the South Pacific.

All of those countries are down under compared to the USA.

Given that...

“The online Urban Dictionary defines possum as a “drinking game in which players have to sit in a tree, like possums, and consume a pack of 24 beers [typically 350ml units in New Zealand] until they fall out of the tree from drunkenness”.

...and knowing the population of Dunedin, I don’t think so. ;o)

When I lived there, they might have consumed a case of beer, and fallen off of their tricycles. lol

Former Dunedin resident here.

Loved the High School band. At that time, with cuts to bands all over the country (Carter inspired), Dunedin’s band was the only true Highland Band in the country, so they were funded.

Loved the Highland games, too.

BTW, I’m Celtic. ;o)

No kidding? You must be one huge, strong guy!

My neighbors had kids who were in the band. I got to listen to them practice their bagpipes. It was at times irritating, but it is still a fond memory.
