Supermoon and the sky in Dallas
me

Posted on 05/05/2012 9:10:21 PM PDT by West Texas Chuck

Went down to White Rock Lake this evening to feed the turtles and watch the moon rise. Pretty impressive display by old Luna.

When I was a kid, the teenagers would “park” at White Rock Lake and as a “code word” they used to say they were going to White Rock Lake to watch the submarines surface. I was a dumb, little kid and I believed them. I always think of that when I hear someone mention White Rock Lake.

We used to go the Submarine Races up on Angeles Crest Highway in the Foothills above Glendale.

It gave the term “Up Periscope” a whole new meaning.

Excellent.

Went out and viewed the moon through binoculars. The features were as vivid as I've ever seen.

I’m in Florida and the moon is so spectacular tonight it actually startled me as it cleared the pine trees and lit up the area like a cop’s chopper spotlight on a Dunkin’ Donuts robbery perp.

We had storms pass through during the late afternoon here in North Carolina, with some clouds lingering and thunderheads on the eastern horizon, so we really didn't get to see it rise, just glimpses between clouds after it was up. Very bright, larger in appearance than usual.

The impressive thing, though, was all the lightning bugs, it was like Christmas tree twinkle lights out across the fields and in the trees. Very unusual to see them at all in early May, let alone in such large numbers.

The brightness of the moon seemed to enthuse them, lol. When it shone visibly, they put on a show, When a passing cloud obscured it, they calmed down.

What a beautiful thing that must have been. I love your description.

From what I hear, the display was better in south Tx.

Are you the guy who found the turtle with his sons initials in its shell after 47 years?
