Arthur’s tales from the Middle Ages (which were cooked up into their present form by the French) were based on very much older tales; they are part of a broader tradition of tribal, pre-Roman Celtic Britain. My favorite conventional post-Roman Arthur hypothesis (can’t remember the name of the author, the book is, I think, “King Arthur: the True Story”) puts the ‘real’ guy in a formerly Roman town in western Britain. Ah, here it is:

? That’s weird, page won’t load.

The “King of Stonehenge” was found to have been from Switzerland.

Hawkins’ work suffers from a bunch of problems.

Number one, there’s no inscriptions on the monuments or any surviving vintage texts in any sources that say anything about the presence of any alignments or any intent.

Number two, in order to get his alignments (and they were his, not the builders’), he used a large margin of error, different eras, and imaginary stones and holes.

Number three, building with such large stones without a long period of observations and recordkeeping wouldn’t result in some kind of stone age observatory or calendar in stone. Previously (including by Hawkins I think, I read the book nearly 40 years ago) it was claimed that the nearby “woodhenge” had been constructed to work out those details in advance — but it turned out that Stonehenge began earlier. And this doesn’t take into account the weather, the overcast, etc.

Basically, Hawkins was doing the same thing as Richard Hoagland does with the Cydonia “monuments” on Mars.

OK, thanks. The book made it sound pretty convincing.

Stonehenge and other monuments might not have a grand significance. Probably just a shopping mall or sports arena. Donald Trump’s ancestors built it just to show off. ;^)

“The “King of Stonehenge” was found to have been from Switzerland.”

That’s where the ancient Brits kept their rocks.

And their cheese.

Y’know, since Switzerland is known for its timepieces, it probably makes sense that Stonehenge must have been built to keep track of time. ;’)

Lol!

But you know it really is amazing that we live in a time that we are starting to genuinely understand the secrets of Stonehenge.

I really thought that they were locked up forever.

Seems an awful lot of work just to commemorate a unification, when a simple handshake would have done the trick. Maybe a mug of beer.

I don't know...doesn't building enormous baseball and football stadiums all over the country, almost always at great public expense, just to play meaningless children's games between factions from different cities ... seem silly? There's no reason enough players couldn't be obtained close at hand, rather than be imported from rival cities on different coasts, to play a game that requires only a plain grassy field and some beer. What is it in our psyche that draws more interest if the teams be "national" rather than all local?
