Lots of those problems went away when they changed powder types to what Gene Stoner recommended. The Army hated Gen. LeMay's plastic rifle, and tried to undermine it.
It has done well over the years. I don't have to have eyes to be able to strip one and put it back together.
Not as well as the AK, but Kalashnikov was a special designer, in the catagory of John Moses Browning.

Does anyone remember the comic books put out by the Navy and given away at the Post Office? I use to wait for every issue. They were a bit like “Classic Comics” in that they taught real history in an easy to read format.
Very entertaining and they would even admit mistakes the Navy had made over the years.

Preventive Maintenance Monthly was the Army's comic book to teach maintenance tips to soldiers. The main characters were MSgt Half Mast, Connie Rodd (the blond), and later a black babe named Bonnie. AFIK, it's sill being distributed to Army units.

Been a big Wil Eisner fan since re-prints of his ‘The Spirit’.
His comic, tech order/job guide is still top notch!

Wow...I used to have a dozen or more of these PMs stashed away.
Back in the day, when the RA got on the Preventative Maintenance bandwagon just about every unit level MM (Maintenance Manual) was in comic book form.
I always thought they would wind-up as collectors items.

PS Magazine was an excellent way to get MWO’s, tips, and updates into the hands of the troops in a timely manner. It was a regular maintenance pub that covered all kinds of Army equipment; not just the M-16.

We Marines got a huge laugh out of the army needing a comic book to get them to clean and maintain their rifles.....
Though it was not their fault they were issued the rifle with inadequate training in maintenance. And a rifle that was quite unlike the Garand, M-1 Carbine, and M-14 in function and cleaning prototcol.

I have the previous version of this in civilian configuration. Exactly like the M-16, but with no auto-select. It’s a 1970 version of an M-16 by Colt called the SP-1...no forward assist, no shell deflector, three prong flash suppressor, triangle forestock, etc.
I like it. Just like the one I had in training. Paid hardly nothing for it and it is beautiful condition.
