OMG So Far I Think This Olympic Opening Ceremony Sucks! (vanity)
Me

The best part, which I think wasn't intended, was when they praised the NHS and then showed the little kids in their hospital beds and all the evil characters of British literature showed up! Says a lot about NHS! Mary Poppins had to save them-- a fantasy!

The athletes are coming in now and apparently the queen picks at her nails and pays no attention when the Brits march in. Uh oh.

Would anyone happen to know the name of the hymn sung by the children from Wales in the opening? I vaguely recognized the lyrics but couldn't place the name. The sound quality from NBC was awful.

"Jerusalem" I know by heart. It is the English equivalent of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. I was wondering if they would play it in the opening ceremonies. It was heartening to see it given such a prominent place.

Garde la Foi, mes amis! Nous nous sommes les sauveurs de la République! Maintenant et Toujours!

I live in the Pacific Northwest so we are just beginning to see the opening ceremony.

There is no way they could compete with the Chinese modern technology.

I think giving a history of England is interesting, but I can't say I cared for the music when they were forging steel. I think it is good for this generation to learn something of history as THEY DON'T KNOW IT.

I don’t like the torch either! To low, and “How many Brits does it take to light an Olympic torch?”

I concur. This was not even in the same league as the Chinese. Even by a British standard - it sucked.

Damn leftist HAD to make it political... oh well.

And the sodimite torch barer kissing the other sodimite. Yeah, thank God the next games are in Rio and not Chicago. One could only imagine...

I change my mind. After an hour and half it hasn’t gotten better. I thought it might tell a good history, but it is Boring!

I would have been fine with the history of England, but it was about 5 seconds worth of history, 3 hours of miss matched sequences of nothing with a lit bit of good music thrown in.

So wrong to see big Ralph Lauren logos on USA jackets and no visible flag anywhere. Perhaps they were wanting to look like NASCAR drivers.

It was so boring I was forced to watch reruns of Next Top Model.

For me the starting bit up to and including where they forged the ring then flew in the other 4 was awesome. The it just got plain weird with the NHS bit (It would be like the USA honoring Medicare just weird and no context with the event.)

The bit with the teens and the internet was jerky and felt contrived. Then it just sorta stopped. Very weird but I loved the “Rings” part and the switch from the agrarian Society to the Industrial Revolution that was cool.

Imagine, the majority of the little boys were named Mohammad.

I suffered through it all. It was midnight here in the Pacific Northwest when it was finally over. I did think the lighting of the torch was unique.

My DVR jump and fast forward buttons are getting a “Royal” workout.

I liked the ring casting part too, most of the rest was like others have said, weird.

But I can say in honesty I would rather see this than Obamas version.

I think it was “Guide me, O Thou Great Redeemer”

(Sung to the tune “Cwm Rhondda”)

Guide me, O thou great Redeemer,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty;
Hold me with thy powerful hand:
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven
Feed me till I want no more.
Feed me till I want no more.

Open thou the crystal fountain
Whence the healing stream shall flow;
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through:
Strong deliverer, strong deliverer
Be thou still my strength and shield.
Be thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side:
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever give to thee.
I will ever give to thee.

Great hymn. I’d also have liked them to sing “Men of Harlech”.

Can you imagine what it would have looked like if Obungo had secured the Olympics for Chicago?

The Chicago mob dancers machine gunning prohibitionists.

The Holder's People drive by chorus line shooting Holder's People.

Illinois Nazis attempting to kill the Blues Brothers.

The Holder's People Can-Can dancers throwing welfare money into the audience.

Hamburglar killing Mayor McCheese.

Rahm Emmanuel tutu dancers fighting with Richard Daley swan lakers

Barack and Moochie Obama descending on a zip line to stop all the fighting to bring peace and happiness

The End.

Sounds like you’ve got the makings of a hit viral YouTube video there hattend! I like it - a lot like what I was imagining BTW.

I might consider the grand entrance of the First Black Couple emulating the British show with the Para-Queen...

...Only they would have to put Mamma MOO-Chelle out of the back of a C-130 with a cargo chute, strapped to a pallet.

The landing might have been a little rough.

We might have expected some part of the gala dedicated to the glory of islam, too, and I would not be looking for a kid’s choir singing “Lead Us On O Great Jehovah” like they surprisingly did for the Brit show... about the only bright spot in an otherwise swirling theatrical nightmare AFAICT.

This was broadcast over the NBC Television Network by it’s affiliates, one of which you could no doubt pick up over the air. If you wanted.

Re your 23 - look up “Lead Us On O Great Jehovah” on You Tube and see if it sounds familiar. Great old 19th Century Classic.

We used to sing it in Church when I was a kid and I knew it so well i didn’t have to look at the hymnal - now all they do is “P&W off the wall” (overhead projector - hymnals all discarded or in storage somewhere).

I hardly ever go to Church any more.
