Hurricane Sandy Is Being Compared To The Worst Hurricane Ever To Hit New England

Hurricane 1938

In an effort to get residents to wake up and pay attention to Hurricane Sandy, the governor of Connecticut just said that Sandy might be as bad was the worst hurricane ever to hit New England--the hurricane of 1938.

The 1938 hurricane hit Long Island and then moved on to Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, killing 600-800 people along the way.

The hurricane was so devastating that several shore communities simply disappeared, along with the people who lived in them. Providence, Newport, Hartford, and other cities were hit with severe flooding (see below). And the death toll was made worse because no hurricane warnings were issued: Forecasters expected the hurricane to turn east and proceed out to sea.

Hurricane 1938 Providence

Providence Public Library

Providence, R.I.As the Wikipedia article below illustrates, the 1938 hurricane was similar in some ways to Sandy, but, so far, anyway, it was far more powerful (Category 5 versus Category 1). It also moved far more quickly, which increased the perceived speed of the winds on the eastern side of the hurricane. The center of Sandy is also projected to hit the Jersey Shore, not New England.

The ‘38 storm was a Category 5, as opposed to this Category 1 storm. How did they ever survive without the TV weathermen standing on every beach hyperventilating about the storm?

They have done this hyping of minor storms so often along the Gulf Coast that people take their warnings with a large grain of salt....making it more dangerous when there really is a significant storm.

The winds of Sandy are just strong enough to keep Benghazi off the front page. That’s how strong Sandy is!

The more they hype this, the less attention people are going to pay. They’ve been at this for over a week now, first it was the “storm of the century” then the “perfect storm” then “frankenstorm” with big wind, massive flooding, extended power outages, end of the world, bla bla bla - every day the information changes and for some the storm will be nothing but a little rain and wind event. For my part of the world it started out with 110 mph winds - now we’re down to 40 - 70 mph. Forecasters should be ashamed of themselves for constantly over hyping weather events. Even the slightest rain storms have now become Noah get the Ark ready events, it’s absurd.

I usually don’t buy into this kind of thinking but with SO much at stake in this election...
God’s wrath?

Not sure about that having been a cat 5 storm, Cat 3 probably but the fact remains it was a doozy according to my father in law who lived in Providence at the time. They had zero warning BTW.

My guess is the airways will be filled with this storm info over the next week in an effort to push any reference to Bengazi off the news.

Sandy is not the 1938 Long Island Express...it’s much closer to the Halloween 1991 “perfect storm” when Hurricane Grace was absorbed into a Canadian low-pressure system. The difference is, Sandy is several hundred miles further southwest and about to hang a hard left into the New Jersey coast and then slow down, whereas the ‘91 storm beat the hell out of Nova Scotia and gave George Clooney a chance to make a movie.

It’s not Andrew or Katrina but it’s going to be a major flooding event both seaside and inland, made worse on the coast by full-moon tides. And then throw in that it’s probably going to unload two feet of snow in the Appalachians in southwestern PA down through the high country of NC. And, tropical storm winds 300+ miles out from the center of the storm. I don’t know how bad the loss of life or property damage will be, but there’s going to be a lot of flooding and a lot of power outages at least.

This is different from a mere hurricane. This is a hurricane with a ‘nor-easter inside it. That is what the fuss is about. Either type storm is dangerous alone, but together it spells disaster.

I’m right on wrong side the Long Island Sound. I hope they’re wrong.

... but the fact remains it was a doozy

My father in Mass. remembers being hunkered down in the house while it went over the farm, battering the buildings and destroying huge trees. To this day the sound of wind whistling around the house makes him nervous.

nobama, his feckless minions and “progressives” have already done more damage to Free America than any storm. Why no headlines about that this week?

Are they going to cancel any democrat related events because of it? There is already talk of canceling the election NINE F-ING DAYS AWAY. (Happy, Guvnuh PURRRRR-due?)

I am still suspicious of how the NOAA was HUNDREDS of miles off with that hurricane that canceled one day of the Republican National Convention. Seriously, have they EVER acted so stupidly, been so incredibly off?

They have to hype every windy rainstorm to keep the viewers wiewing and the ad buyers buying. Is Jim Cantore still going out and standing in front of swaying traffic lights? I recall too that Gunga Dan Rather got his start by standing out in the rain somewhere in Texas many years ago. The more things change...

Agreed. That is what happened with Hurricane Hugo, the one that swept inland NC/SC hundreds of miles when it combined with a very large inland storm (’mid-latitude cyclone’ according to my astronomy professor) that reenergized it.

Ummm... It’s a frikkin’ Category 1. It’s barely worth noting ‘til it’s a 3.

Weather folks are PROMOTING it to be the “Worst Ever”. Can only compare after “results” are seen.

Early in the Summer there was some report that Weather Channel and others needed to regain their stature by promoting storms into EPIC storms and even going so far a naming Winter storms.

Yes, it’s only a Cat 1 – but it’s very slow moving and hundreds of miles wide. The winds and rain hit here in Newport News this morning and the worst isn’t expected to hit until Tuesday. We already have flooding in some areas.
There’s more to a hurricane than wind.

So - a Cat 1 is worse than a cat 5?

or it this a convenient WAg-the-Dog provided by nature - push the Traitorous/CRIMINAL Benghazi action off the radar?

A lot has come out - thanks to FOX - but I suspicion we haven't even seen the tip of the ice burg. Why the refusal for a rescue? WAs the attack a planned/coordinated ‘attack’ to take ‘a prisoner’ that could then be heroically ‘rescued” - and the POS CIC touted a hero? Only the Amb’dor got trapped and asphyxiated. WAs a dead Amb’dor not calculated on, leaving a last minute panic/scramble - not able to pin it on their collusionists who might squeal - so a panic straw man scenario of “VIDEO VIDEO VIDEO” -

‘bozo's momma should read him some proverbs rather then sending him off to 4 am Koran lessons.

First Proverb: “Oh what tangled webs we weave when...”
