Need Advice on Purchase of Automatic Weapon

Posted on 11/09/2012 4:41:12 PM PST by Tail Gunner John

I have now gotten religion on the need to purchase my first automatic rifle. I have very little personal experience to draw upon in making my selection. I'm looking for an economical but reliable weapon. My goal is to buy the rifle and lay in a reasonable supply of ammunition for less than $1000. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

As they said in the Texas War of Independence, “Come and Get It...”

The 1000 rds for 349$ is 223 stuff, not 308. 1000 rds of 308 runs ya 5-700$. So choose wisely grasshopper!

"I need a small thermo nuclear weapon. Any advice?"

You should properly address that question to Dinsdale Piranha. (Just keep an eye out for Spiney Norman!)

I haven’t priced an AR-15 in recent days but I’d be surprised that you can find one in stock under $1000 right now.

If you haven’t seen them, they are well worth the few minutes to watch.

The reference to the nuclear weapon is in there - somewhere.

You’re asking for gun advice on Free Republic? What the hell kind of tail gunner are you, anyway?

I wouldn't own a full auto in a caliber smaller than .20mm. Waste, in my opinion. Besides, I'm poor now, and don't run in those circles with guys that spend $5000US for a weekend of shooting anymore. ;)

Same here except maybe for a Thompson or Uzi in urban environs. Seems to be a great tool for keeping heads down. WWII GIs and Israeli commandos can't be all wrong. ;)

Many ARs on the online sites are “Out of Stock” already.

Same with AKs.

"Come and Get It...”

You reminded me of a message left for the Union troops on a Steamboat sunk cross-ways in the Red above Alexandria, "Y'all all invited to the big dance in Shreveport..."

I was looking at one of those. But I didn’t have any guns small enough to carry in the summer, so I spent my money on a S&W 649. Very similar to the Model 60 I used to own before my oldest daughter took it, but with a shrouded hammer.

Enjoy the gun. I’ll bet it will be fun!

I'm happy enough with Clem and rifle support in close quarters.

I would own a Thomson, if I was wealthy again, with the Cutts compensator, for historical reference. I wouldn't actually use it. Cleaning would be a stone cold... problem.

Clem and aimed fire work well enough for me and mine.

I guess it’s like 2008 all over again, except this time Obamao will push “gun control” legislation in his next term. He may have to wait until 2014 but it will come.

I was thinking about purchasing a couple of handguns and a long gun earlier this year but really didn’t want to pony up the money. Times are tougher and the money is tough for us to come by.

I bought a S&W AR-15 in 2008 that I can’t hit anything with, no matter how much range time I put in, using the iron sights. I might sell it while the prices are higher to fund my handgun purchases.

I'm pretty sure the Thompsons during the 30’s are what started the rukus with fully automatics.

I believe a semi-auto Thompson is still in production. Cheaper ones have aluminum receivers; steel costs over $1k.

Not likely that I'll pick one up. Have been looking into a mechtech upper for a Clock in .45 caliber though. My son has one for the Clock 9mm and turned it into a sweet shooting little carbine.

They have a threaded model for 40 bucks more. A silencer isn’t cheap.
