Hi FReepers...
For the last year, my wife and I have been giving serious consideration to moving our family out west.
We are born and raised New Englanders. We're a homeschooling family that enjoys outdoor mountain activities and also the arts and sciences.
We are looking for a conservative area [low taxes, less government, personal freedom, family friendly] and were wondering if anyone out there might have some recommendations. I have focused on Idaho and Montana, but am receptive to other suggestions.
I plan on making a trip out early next year to investigate... thanks in advance to all who reply!
Look what happened to New Hampshire after all of the libs from Taxachussets moved up there.
Some pension incomes are excluded from the income tax. Even the Democrats in this state tend to run on no new taxes platform.
Republican controlled legislature and Many in the Administration is also Republican. Still have that Dem Governor and Senator though.
Let me understand.. .you are going to move a high end pool construction company to the pacific northwest? Dont get me wrong, I want you to find your happiness. but you would be better off hiring a research company to look for emerging markets in the area of pool construction, then decide from there. Unless you have stored resources that you can live off of. Figure out how many pool permits have been pulled in the last 3 years in that state and then do the math.

This is a very important question, one that I’ve been thinking about for some time now. I registered on FR just so I could answer it.
The short answer: When people live in ethnically homogenous communities, they create social welfare systems (including things like public transport, public hospitals, good public schools, etc.). When people live in ethnically diverse communities, community trust declines and social welfare systems become contentious.
You may be familiar with Robert Putnam’s study which showed quite clearly that an increase in ethnic diversity correlates strongly with a decrease in social trust, all across the board, and within given ethnic groups as much as between them. Casual observation confirms this: some of the most socialist states in the world are some of the most homogenous: Scandinavia.
The massive demographic shift that has been going on in the US for decades now is the root cause of a sea change in the political scene. One result is that white conservatives oppose government in a way that e.g. Eisenhower would have found incomprehensible. They are doing this because they don’t want their money to go to other ethnic groups. If the US was still 90% white, a national healthcare program would be far less controversial.
The MSM calls this type of behavior racist. It’s not, or not entirely, racist; what it is is _racial_, ethnic, a matter of in-group/out-group dynamics. Wanting to keep resources within one’s ethnic or cultural group is not inherently wrong - all groups do this. I sincerely wish that this fact were acknowledged and dealt with openly in public discourse. Ignoring it is only going to make things worse.

Several FReepers are in Alaska, and from their descriptions I’ve often wished I could move out there. I have family I want to stay near, and health issues that are made worse by cold weather, or I probably would have moved out there years ago.

Check out the SWVA, E KY, E TENN, W NC area.Housing is an excellent buy there, you’ll have a lot of money left after replacing your home.
Climate will be similar just a little warmer. Conservative politics and people.

I do think Rush is going to move-but I am not aware of Costa Rica. I was thinking Singapore. He mentions New Zealand now and then, but it is so infested with socialists, I doubt it. I think he has a plan in place, and may make the move before they try to take what he has in taxes and then try to shut him down on the radio.
Got a CCW on Friday-urge all who can to do the same and start thinking how to protect what we have.
East Tennessee is beautiful country. Knoxville is pretty conservative. So is Chattanooga. Nashville is purple and Memphis is a liberal cesspool.

Greenville, SC...very family friendly, conservative, near the great Smoky Mountains, great location to Charlotte, Atlanta, Chattanooga, TN....a beautiful area, with very nice weather, four distinct seasons. Great schools, public and private, as well as collegiate: Clemson, Furman, Bob Jones University, et al. Great family oriented entertainment, and just the right size of area that you’ll feel a part of the community in no time. Anyway, that ought to be enough to spark your curiosity.
Easily Idaho. The libs have the university towns in MT as well as the area around Flathead Lake. I live in Eastern WA, almost in ID and not far from Canada. This part of the state is cheap to live and conservative. If it weren’t for no WA state income tax I’d be going to ID quickly. Coeur d alene area very nice but more expensive real estate than NE WA. Be advised, ID has a real estate tax on “view”.
We’re thinking about Oklahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.

My real estate taxes in ID are 20% of what they were in Illinois.
I have great love for both states (hence my name!) You could do much worse than either state.
Oklahoma’s Governor and entire congressional delegation are Republican. State House is controlled by Republicans. I think I heard every county went for Romney.
Norman area of course is fairly liberal (college town) but as conservative as you will get for that kind of environment.
The Open Carry law just went into effect in Oklahoma on Nov 1. Not sure about the Texas carry laws.
Can be very hot in summer and can be quite cold at times in winter, but overall is a lovely state. Reasonable state income tax. Strong push/discussion in the legislature going on to try to move to abolishing it.
Texas is a growing place. My folks had a place in a sleepy little town outside of DFW that now is a large big city in and of itself now. Austin is quite liberal. Houston subject to hurricanes. Summers are hot throughout Texas, but rest of the year tends to be beautiful. No income tax. Lots of cultural features.
The state actually can be divided into 5 geographical areas. Coast, Piny Woods of East Texas, North Central plains, Hill Country, and Western Desert.
People in both states tend to be good down to earth people. Not perfect people, but good people!

I have enough in savings to settle in and take my time getting started. I’ve been focusing on resort areas where there are second and third homes being built. I am also making inquiries into growth areas through my national vendors, industry web forums, and my industry memberships.

I’m in Eastern Washington,Stevens County, conservative, no state tax, average sales tax, low property taxes (paying $500 on 8 acres) beautiful scenery,and for the most part, good, God fearing people. My only complaint is our political voice is lost West of the Cascades. The weather is about what you’d find in the New England states. That being said, being joined to the pan handle of Idaho would be utopia.
