Buy an owl. They LOVE cats.

Trap it and bring to animal control.

I've got one of these if you want to borrow it-

Get your cat fixed. It is reacting as a normal hormonal feline would when another strutts its stuff for it. Cats are nocturnal and cruise for mates at night. Your’s is giving off the “smell” or is reacting to it. Get it fixed and that’ll be the end of nuisance. No need to cage the hunter.... just fix the prey!!!

Outdoor cats are more likely to contract disease, get injured or killed.

The same can be said for humans, but I'm not going to bar my kids from ever leaving the house because the world has danger in it.

I've had cats since I was married, which is nearly twenty years now. Our first kitty went missing after about eighteen months. Another kitty (her daughter) got hit by a car when she was 10 years old. We were also moving at the time, and we think the activity spooked her into unusual behavior.

Other than that, we've never had a single other kitty be injured, fall sick, or be killed because they lived outdoors.

No, no no no no NO! Bad idea!

There’s a reason anyone cleaning up cat marking or an accident is told NEVER use ammonia. Urine contains ammonia and this is likely to start a marking war! This is quite literally the worst advice that could be given...I know the person who posted it means well, and the idea of offending their nose isn’t entirely bad, but ammonia is the worst choice of anything.

I tend to hear of citrus being used as a deterrent but I’m not sure if it’s a scent deterrent or a taste one, and obviously only a scent one is relevant. Even then it may not...I’ve seen a cat or two that turns out to LOVE citrus. Still, orange peels/grating is cheap enough, if you buy and eat the orange yourself. Research that if you want.

Someone suggested mothballs, which could work. I don’t know of any contraindications for that, other than the cat might be dumb enough to chow down...hopefully not!

A non chemical deterrent that might work is tin foil. Place some on the area where the cat is getting, taped down enough to not blow away in the wind but loosely enough to crinkle and rattle. Many cats hate this underfoot.

Adding in the interest of full disclosure...I asked hubby if he knew and he swears ammonia will work, but I’ve always heard and seen the opposite.

“A spray bottle by the back door? If you get woken up, grab the bottle, spritz the cat a few times...”

With household ammonia solution. Great deterrent.

“The same can be said for humans, but I’m not going to bar my kids from ever leaving the house because the world has danger in it.”

Would you let small children go out without supervision? If so, then you shouldn’t have cats either.

***

” Our first kitty went missing after about eighteen months. Another kitty (her daughter) got hit by a car when she was 10 years old.”

***

Then you have two cats who perished because of your carelessness. Two cats lost or killed because they got outside are two too many.

Procyones?

Thought that was a star or an old PC game or something...

Yes, the common raccoon is a procyon lotor.. We used to call them just 'coons until that became racist...

We had a cat for sixteen years (1960-76), who came and went as she pleased. She took care of her own territory. I’m glad she was able to live in an America that was free.

it's also the reason I have 25 cats on my farm.

We don't have 25 on this farm, but I'm really sure that's how the ones here (right now numbering 5) get here. The number comes and goes, probably due to the coyotes and big owl population.. The manx (yes, someone dumped one) we adopted. She is either spayed or sterile because she never showed up pregnant in the two years before she came in the house. She has now permanently claimed our couch as home..

Just didn’t want to get flamed. I once responded to a heartwarming little story about a bunch of firefighters who spent hours rescuing a couple stray dogs that had fallen through the ice. As I recall, I made some point that a sniper from shore would have been more humane as the dogs were in the water for quite a while and one died anyway.

WOW, the responses were mind blowing.

And with a wandering cat (feral or not), you will not see a mouse or rat.

An inaccurate and misleading statement.

At my property I do battle with field mice who are trying to setup house in my garage while at the same time the space under my three-season porch reeks of cat urine. The well-fed neighbor's cat doesn't bother with the mice, but it still needs to relieve itself somewhere

But why under my porch? :(

Right now I'm thinking that if I trap the cat tonight I'm better off driving it 10 miles away and letting it go

You are an evil person.
