Black Standard Poodle

Posted on 11/27/2012 3:10:13 PM PST by VA Voter

We just lost our 11.5 year old female Black Standard Poodle to complications from gastric torsion surgery: pneumonia and cardiac arrest. This was our second standard and are committed to the breed. We would like to replace her but there are having trouble finding litters here in VA or in the neighboring states of MD, WV or NC.

We would appreciate it if anyone knows of a breeder or a home breeder within 300-400 miles of Richmond, VA. We are not interested in showing and would prefer a black female puppy that would probably top out around 65-70 lbs which is larger than customary. If necessary, we would be willing to pay to have her shipped so this could extend the distance for the right fit.

Thank you.

Doggie ping.

My condolences for the loss of your dog. My daughter lost her black standard rescue poodle a couple of years ago at age 16 1/2 for the same reason. She was devastated.

Check out the breeders carefully. My daughter finally adopted a red standard poodle after a lengthy search, but found a lot of eccentric breeders in the mean time. Then (after a year with the new dog) somebody gave her a black standard female poodle after the previous owner died suddenly. So, now she has 2 dogs.

But, I could write a book about some of the people she dealt with to acquire those 2 dogs! I think she could have adopted a child easier.

I have some good friends who breed red poodles specifically for retrieving work.

They are not show dogs but actual working bird dogs - outrageously expensive I might add.

But they know just about everybody in the poodle world, and I will contact them to see if they know a reputable poodle breeder in RIC.

Those are very reasonable prices for a Standard Poodle puppy. When my daughter was looking, all of the puppies she was able to find were in the $2000-$3000 range. She ended up “rescuing” 2 dogs for free — one from a breeder (the dog turns out to have serious health problems, but she is managing) and one from someone who died. (Poodles are never “free” just because of the grooming expenses.)

She was looking for an adult dog that no one wanted to breed — not a puppy. But those were the prices she encountered. $2000-$3000.

Insane, and quite overboard. So many of those we met while looking for either of two specific breeds we wanted once upon a time many years ago were obviously Liberal, so taken with themselves, and the little part of their animal specific breed World it’s a wonder the animals didn’t puke themselves to death as their humanoids pontificated, and posed.

We love animals. Our lives having been pretty much dedicated to them next only to one another. Over almost 35 years of marriage we’ve had 40 dogs, and as many cats as well other animals including Donkeys, Horses, Ducks, Chickens, and some cockatiels, but not in the numbers as the dogs, and cats.

We know animals. We care for them when they show up at our door with their lost dog bone, and patheticat expressions, and crumble to their will.

Libs make everything more than it is to make themselves appear necessary, and if they can’t do it with BS, they become even more creative.

Best dog I ever had or ever will have was a standard poodle. Smart, protective and loyal, able to swim to a depth of about 10 ft and retrieve rocks or golf balls. Amazing dogs, sorry for your loss and best of luck with your search.

To look for a good breeder you might check the AKC website and/or go to a sanctioned dog show. Look at the dogs yourself and ask around among the breeders for good info.

Good breeders know good breeders and are always interested in talking to people who really care about their breed.
